Have you noticed that you tend to think negatively when you don't hear back from others?

I tend to fill the silence with negative assumptions—maybe they’re upset or maybe I said or did something wrong.

I think this response is from our need for social connection and validation. When I don't hear back from someone, my mind seems to try to solve the “why,” often thinking about worst-case scenarios.

Maybe I should try to remind myself that there could be many reasons for the silence, none of which have to do with me.

I just had similar thoughts about someone.

Concur with your last thought. Rare that we are the cause of any silence.

I always thought that was just the pessimist in me. Somehow, knowing I'm not the only one makes me feel better. Is that bad?

Very true. We tend to seek the worst possible conclusions when it can be almost any reason.

I believe in the old saying "No news is good news".

Currently thinking the same. But then realized that I too have not responded back to someone and it has nothing to do with them, just simply forgot to reply as I am distracted with other things in life. We all get busy in life and other things make us forget to socialize.

Very familiar! Because many of my clients have worked through that issue. It's one thing to intellectually know that it's not you and it takes an extra step to resolve it on the emotional level so that negative thought no longer shows up.
