The In-Office Experience

Coming out of the pandemic (although I’m not sure we ever really have come out of the pandemic), I’ve learned that I really like my time in the office.  The hustle, bustle and plain social nature of being around a group is just plain fun.

I am convinced I learn more in the office as well – even at this stage in my career.  There is no substitute for wandering into someone’s office – or someone wandering into yours – to kick around an idea.

But I also find that if I have a big project that needs focused attention, I prefer to tackle that project at home – where my only distraction is the refrigerator (a topic for another blog).

What is your experience these days with in-office work?

My work is entirely virtual and I like it. Still, on days where everyone rings my bell to get access to the building or loud music from other apartments persists, or when I want the distraction of a good conversation, I miss going to an office. Not sure, though, if this is mostly nostalgia.

Happy to work entirely remote these days. Might feel differently if there was a company office near home, but nearly 35 years of the LIRR schlep was enough for me. Key is to be communicative with my clients whether by phone or zoom and not to be in an email only cycle.

I have found that volunteering outside of work is a relief from being with Me all the time.
I can really get on my nerves.

I enjoy the quiet at home but do miss some of the action at the³ office. But I prefer remote work. You just need to set limits for time working or it will suck you in.

Personally, the pandemic did not slow me down much. Mainly because Social Security didn't slow down much. That being said, the office is definitely my preferred space. But like you, if I need undisturbed time, the home office it is!
