Uber

I must admit that until this past weekend I was unfamiliar with Uber (Lyft too).

We went to Ann Arbor to visit our grandson Jackson and to see the Michigan-Penn State game in The Big House and were advised not to rent a car on such a hectic weekend due to parking problems.

Joanne had the Uber app on her phone and was therefore in charge of hooking us up for the ride and the drivers.

My experience was mostly devoted to being along for the ride and chatting up the drivers.

Well let me tell you, it was quite an experience as each driver (all male) was quite an individual slice of 21st century middle America.

They each had a story and it poured out of them.  I learned that they earn 75% of the cost of the ride and that riders rarely tip.

Each in his own way was fiercely independent as they drove to earn a living.

One was an older man keeping himself busy.  Another was a young man hoping to become a teacher, but short of the tuition to earn the requisite degree.  Another was an “entrepreneur” who said we did not have enough time to discuss his ideas, but asked my opinion as to whether he should sell bottled water in the car.  Another was a retired Postal worker who lost his home in a bankruptcy after a near death experience who drove up from Grand Rapids to get in on the college weekend Uber ride opportunities, but didn’t know his way around and got lost.  Another had an ominous air about him and we couldn’t wait to get out of his car.

Many were talking on the phone in a different language as we got into the car.

Our last driver was a 28 year old Palestinian with a near perfect Uber rating who is studying to be an accountant. He complained to us in perfect English that Uber had a $50 bonus going for 28 rides in a certain time period and ours was the 27th and he just missed.  He told us he was engaged and that his future father in law had already complained that he had not shown respect.

He then showed his entrepreneurial wares by asking to take us to the airport off the books and we agreed.  When we got to the room Joanne realized she left her precious Michigan scarf in the car and because we had agreed to the morning ride I had his cell number and I texted him.  He quickly responded “Yes she did leave it.  We are meant to see each other again.”

I hope Uber never sees your blog as the last driver if ID's could risk being barred from the platform. The failure of Uber's platform to allow tipping represents one of its many flaws.

Although I have very conflicted feelings particularly in the disregard Uber drivers have for other drivers, the system does represent an opportunity for any who have interesting stories and ambitions.
Dana Charlton

As always, you made something mundane like a taxi ride more interesting for everyone!
I do think the last driver was hitting you up for the $50 bonus. I wonder how many people he told that story to and how many people gave him extra. Nonetheless it was nice of him to hold Joanne's scarf.

The Uber app does allow tipping (strangely, nearly all the time, but not 100% of the time). I have tipped dozens of drivers directly through the Uber app. Recently, in Rome, I used Uber twice before learning that it was illegal - both driver & passenger apparently can be fined. Given the taxi situation in Rome, they need Uber, Lyft, et al.

Our experience with Uber (we haven't tried Lyft or the others) has been mostly positive. Interestingly, we typically book Uber to go to the airport; but take a cab home from the airport, feeling it's probably quicker than having an Uber driver try to find us in the sea of people waiting for rides after a flight.

My daughter is big on Uber, I have never arranged a ride on my own but am often tempted (like when waiting on cab line at Penn). I didn't realize tipping was a thing---my daughter told me the price is total amount when I was uncomfortable about not adding a tip when we were in a ride together. Given David's comment (and David is always correct) I am hopeful my daughter checked the box for a tip.

I was your Uber driver

Actually my experience is at JFK, the Uber driver was there in literal moments while the Taxi line was at least a 30 min wait...

Via is the BEST, unless you are carrying video equipment then Uber...
Cayce Crown

There is absolutely no requirement to tip, it is part of the price, but sometimes you just have the best ride and want to do more.

I'm a huge fan of Uber, Via and Lyft. They have saved me numerous hassles and aggravations. And, frankly, are generally more pleasant drivers and cleaner cars than taxis. Some great stories from the drivers too, less separation than in a cab.

My husband loves Uber and is generally in charge of Ubering. I'm still shy about using it and still prefer cabs.

Mostly positive experiences with Uber...quick and easy to use. While I always tip the drivers.

I enjoy Uber or Lyft when traveling. It is by far the best way to get around Vegas. I also used both in Florida and I was pleased by the speed of service going to the Port, but not so good when getting picked up. Some airports and Ports require special passes for a fee or they are not allowed in. If the driver gets caught, the passengers must get out and drivers can get a fine. Yes, tipping is on the app, after you arrive when getting the receipt, you can add one at that time. We choose to give cash on the spot for a tip and it is always appreciated.

I never use Uber in the City but have used it all over the country - have done business with some of the drivers I have met along the way. It's always fun to find out the backstory and I am not surprised that you talk with them. Driving is not for the faint of heart whether it's a car service or taxi. I am always appreciative that one or the other is available when I need them. Good conversation is a bonus.

Everybody has a story eh Derf ? It’s amazing when you think about it . Like you I engage people . How long have you been doing this ? That usually is a good opener . Oh about a month or so after I got out of Rikers . Now we’re talking . Plenty of beef for the sandwich now . How much time did you do ? Now we’re hooked . And on it goes . Uber is the antidote for the drunk drivers . Our kids use nothing but . For Concert venues we use a car service . Or stay at a hotel within walking distance . A few years ago after a dinner at the Old Homestead steakhouse we grabbed an Uber and ran into Derek Jeter coming out of a bar with his then girlfriend Hannah . JETE ! Need a ride ? The driver had no idea who he was . One time a Persian driver started to bitch about the traffic . Right ? Like the traffic in Teheran is any better my son said . You Americans can’t drive he sneered . Win some lose some . I go to law school and drive Uber said Sahid , barely missing the 57th street bus pulling out ahead of us . I use the App . No fuss no muss . Clean . What happens in Uber stays in Uber . Comedians in Cars drinking coffee .
