In 1985, I bought my first car – a white Oldsmobile Omega.  The car was a hand-me-down.  It had been my dad’s and he was buying a new one.  Literally, a new Omega.  I had just moved home after law school and it seemed a good idea to have wheels.  I remember the car made funny noises.

This week, my son is buying his first car – a 2023 Honda Accord Hybrid.  Seriously, he wins.  He has been driving our fifteen-year-old Honda Accord but it is getting a little long in the tooth to be reliable so far away.  Hence, an intense hunt for a new car, analysis of technology, environment and finances – and then a decision.

What do you remember about your first car?

My Mom's red Torino. My first day with my license I hit another car while parking in a parking lot. I didn't know that you were supposed to leave your name. My parents knew about it before I even got home. Needless to say I wasn't allowed to drive it for another month.

73 Plymouth Fury. Huge. My dad bought it used for $300. It sat five of my friends comfortably across the backseat. Lol.

It was a 1967 ugly green (!!) Dodge Dart -- shockingly fast off the line, I smoked most of my high school classmates' Camaros, Mustangs, GTOs, and other sportier cars in our regular reckless drag races. I'm happy to report that I've matured slightly since then.

Also Oldsmobile. ‘84 Cutlass Supreme. They sold over 1 million of them. My Blue one had a cassette player so brought my own music for the first song as I pulled out onto middle neck road in great neck. But there was traffic. As this 17 year old is growing impatient, Eye of the Tiger is now blasting….and I zip out into traffic. Safely. Whew! NoAccidents until 297 miles later…so much more but that’s enough for here/now

1989 Mercury Tracer hatchback. It was based on the old Mazda 323 platform back when Ford owned part of Mazda. It was a great little car that got me through my first several jobs up until 1999 when I flipped it upstate after getting new tires and taking a turn on a country road and hit a black ice patch. My passenger and I were able to crawl out of it when upside down, through the window and walked to a nearby house where an ambulance was called. It was my last time ever taking a turn fast and we thanked G-D that we had nothing more than some bruises. Suffice to say, the car was totaled. It saved out lives. I loved that little car.

Grandpa's Malibu which guzzled...oil. Really. I often do not count it and consider Dad's '67 Impala Convertible --blue of course, my first true car.
