Peas In A Pandemic

These are strange times.

Grocery shopping now is always an adventure. (Yes, I am still going albeit with utmost caution and protection and only when absolutely necessary).

Forget about going with a pre-determined list. Flexibility is the key.

My supermarket is rationing items. Frozen vegetables, of all things, are restricted. Four to a shopper. And then, the question is choice. Broccoli is abundant. Corn is plentiful. Peas, on the other hand, for some reason are in high demand and oh, so difficult to find. Peas. We like peas in my house.

This past Saturday, I was studying the frozen vegetable display searching for peas. A neighbor (ok, really a stranger from my neighborhood) asked if I knew where he could find peas. We lamented for a moment about “no peas at Shoprite” and he joked that he was going to be in big trouble when he showed up without peas at home.

He left. I kept looking – and then, tucked away in the back of some other vegetables by a brand I had never heard of, I found them. A handful of small bags of petite peas. So here is the embarrassing part – I literally exclaimed out loud at full voice “Peas!!”, called up the aisle to my new friend to come back -- and noticed several people around me heading toward my new found gold.

I have had the same feelings when getting other items, like chicken. It's like you found treasure!!

Gotta know-Did you save the peas for your neighbor or did others get them?

I still only shop on line--Whole Foods and Fairway---have noticed much quicker (almost immediate) deliveries, however still finding some things hard to find, and very surprising given I don't think people were interested pre-pandemic. A specific vegan egg product we use for baking is literally nowhere to be found. And yes, when things all of a sudden are back on the list, I admit to becoming a bit more giddy than I should.

I can live without peas. But I never realized the shortage. We were in eastern PA this Sunday and went to the local Weiss Supermarket, they had plenty of fresh vegetables and meat. I did not look in the frozen sections. I am beginning to wonder if this shortage is real or a way to drive prices up artificially in our NY neck of the woods.

We are growing our own. By mid-summer, we should have enough for a meal or two....

Wow! Strange things are sold out! Hand sanitizer was gone for weeks, but on my last trip there was a whole shelf full of hand sanitizer from a “Beach Bum” brand. I guess it’s hit or miss!

It was actually kind of nice to watch. Everyone was very neighborly about splitting up what was in the case. And yes, the neighbor was able to bring home peas to his wife and stay out of trouble.

I really have to figure out how to shop on line. It's just not working.

Right? I'm pretty sure that I have enough hand sanitizer now but definitely not enough Clorox Wipes -- or apparently peas.
