Dear Diary

Categories
Health

I have kept a hand written daily diary religiously since 1/1/70.  It is a ritual which serves many many purposes.

Some of the positive benefits are historical and others are mental.

I started reading it 11 years ago and each night I am reading 34 years ago today and a year ago today.  The benefit of such perspective is immeasurable.  The invariable lesson is that the anxiety is, more often than not, much worse than the reality and a taxing waste of energy.  To read about my fear and apprehension and know the result is quite empowering, therapuetic and cathartic.

I could go on and on about the benefits, but it is also a slavish time consuming work. Another downside is that there is always the prospect of a subpoena hanging over me and, in fact, it was once subpoenaed.

All in all, I highly recommend the discipline and plan to continue writing my feelings and happenings for the rest of my life.

I sometimes wonder what my last words will be.

So it goes...

You didn't mention the most endearing part of the ritual - how you start each entry.
Julie Klein

I think you should expand on the concept of anxiety and worry and how the events, experiences and stresses played out - that one sentence only scratched the surface (so to speak). It's something to see how you've worried -- and where that gets you ("you" as in all of us). It's a lesson we should all pay more attention to.

i've seen - and it the tiniest neatest handwriting - and it's the WHOLE page. it's cool - especially when you say - a year ago today we were .......

Yes Julie! That is what struck me.

Very, very thought provoking.
How often do you worry about your kids in the diary? From a life path standpoint?
Fred Klein

Invariably things work out. Maybe we are just lucky, but as Branch Rickey said "luck is the residue of design" and design is the product of worrying over a situation or problem.
Fred Klein

To Jane's point, each page starts "Dear Jo," as if a letter from afar and she reads it.
Benjamin Geizhals

It is nice being the some-time beneficiary of your diary when you share entries from things we shared years ago.

You do know that will be the title of your biography one day - "Dear Jo - from Gotham & Beyond - the real Fred Klein Story".

Something that I left out above is that possibly because of diary self help therapy I've never seen a Shrink.
Dana Charlton

You're revealing secrets about the Red Covered Inner Sanctum? Well, then I'll add that it's always interesting when you step through the door and say, for example, "34 years ago today, ...." with a tidbit of my own life.
Flo Feinberg

...and that discipline is only part of what makes you the world's most interesting man"! You are such a special person and the fact that you've fastidiously documented your life from 1970 is amazing....what life lessons you can learn, and how generously you share that knowledge with your universe of friends.

What a life lesson. Can you share if you have dealt with a stressful situation differently after reading how you handled it in the past? Does the reminder of what you read or wisdom with age help you presently? Or is there less stress since you have put it all into perspective?

I had a pink diary with a lock and key on it. I wish I still had it to read.

Just know now 9 times out of 10 the anticipation is far worse than reality and I assure myself of that verity when anxiety presents itself.

I have also watched this lefty make some diary entries...truly fascinating!
Unfiltered Fred---I think Dear Jo is much better.

Your perspective on how much we endlessly worry is good to know---I'd like to know--has it changed?

As a TW---are we written into the diary? I'm asking for a friend :)
