Harper Lee
Did you know that Truman Capote Summered next door to the small town Alabama home of (Nell) Harper Lee?
Did you know that Harper Lee served as Capote's research assistant while he was writing In Cold Blood?
Did you know that there has always been an unsubstantiated rumor and suspicion that Capote wrote or rewrote To Kill a Mockingbird?
All these questions gain fresh life with the publication last week of Lee's second book (actually Mockingbird first draft) Go Set A Watchman wherein she depicts Atticus 20 years after the first book's trial as a racist segregationist.
I don't know the answers to the above questions, but what I do know, from the point of view of a lawyer: what a great lawyer racist Atticus had to be to defend a "negro" so zealously despite his prejudice and personal point of view. If nothing else, Watchman elevates and humanizes an otherwise too good to be true Gregory Peck type.
Rumor has it that there is a third manuscript in the Harper Lee safe deposit box. What more could she have imagined that is not happening today?

Diane has been talking about this literary phenomenon for awhile now. She has an incredible ability to come up with these scoops and I listen and make eye contact but am mostly only half way on the page trying for full coverage. No longer. Thank you. Harper Lee. Wow. What a story. I remember reading TKAMB in 1960 as a required read by Mrs. Bennett my English teacher in 10th grade at RHS. A beautiful red head who I had a huge crush on. I would read anything for her. Even Crime and Punishment. So off to the races I was, getting hooked on books involved with trials ( My Cousin Vinnie etc. LOL ) I remember watching Truman Capote on Johnny Carson thinking holy crap this guy is a nut case . Unless he had another literary side to him how the hell could he be associated with In Cold Blood ? And Harper Lee was only in her early 30's when she wrote TKAMB ? Alabama...Scotch and Scampi via Kenny Stabler (RIP)...I'm drifting...So now brother my obligation is to reread TKAMB, read Go Set a Watchmen, watch the movie again. Check out Robert Duval as Boo Radley ( the guy is one of the greatest actors of all time.) BUT...I am a literary procrastinator in the true sense. Great intentions but lack of focus. Right now I'm reading one with one in the wings, one unfinished etc. It could take years. How would you describe our weirdo connection that rings so true bro ?
P.S. There is a whole other dialogue here. The racial divide of 2015. How and why. I have thoughts. For another day.
