Auto Correct or Connect?

Categories

I had a text message “conversation” with one of my college roommates last week that went something like this:

Stacy: Ro, Merrimack’s daughter grad [law school] in May. Would you talk to her?

Thinking this was a favor just for my roommate my response was, “Sure.”

Stacy: Thanks so much, Merrill [a friend of hers whom I have known since college] will be thrilled.

Me: Merrill?? For Merrill, of course I would. Look at what you wrote.

Stacy: Ugh!!! Auto-correct!!!!

Clearly, if I wasn’t inclined to do the favor just for my roommate, not knowing who the proposed interview was  truly for, this conversation could have been very different. Which leads to my question, Auto-correct, fan or no?

Like it mostly, but some ugly stuff results at times. You must look before send.

I do my best to double check everything before hitting send. I once sent a request for my husband to bring home toilet paper to my hair stylist. It made his (my hair stylist's) day. :)

Always the computer's fault. We can be in the middle of the matter at hand and then a host of pop up messages arrive, the mouse cursor move, enter gets tapped or the mouse button selects (the unintended); or the spinning cursor curse. The idea: if mistake made, make it only once.
Funny thing: most miscues occur through things we set up to make our use of the electronic devices easier.
Ugh.
As an aside, I can often find myself clarifying e-communications -- just to be sure. The subject header on many threads evolve to have nothing to do with the content of the original message(s).

My propensity for cursing hasn't caught on yet, surely I don't say duck that often!
I find it annoying, yet helpful when I'm at a loss for spelling--even easy words!

As the college roommate in question : ), I will compare it to getting older - it stinks, but it beats the alternative! Tried shutting it off, and it was way worse.

And, Jaclyn just told me she was going to have to stay up "late" and it came out "latte". I told her to go to Starbucks.
