We recently had a house guest who inspired the above title.

She gave real life meaning to the expression "she gives as much as she takes".

Prior to her arrival we were the appreciative recipients of a bountiful Zabar's Gift Basket (truly a fine artful lodger's touch).

She lived in our guest room in the manner of an appreciative family member (without the drama) and pitched in whenever and wherever she could.

We did not go anywhere without her and our coordinated biking was a highlight to behold.

As soon as she left the house was empty and we missed her.

On reflection, we realized
that she played her role and held up her end, offering ample intellectual and emotional capital in return for our hospitality.

She was truly The Artful Lodger!

We looked forward to her visit and for her return.

We have a guest room. It's actually the nicest room in the house. It has a big picture window that overlooks a beautiful garden. The room is filled with family pictures and artifacts. It has a small library, a DVD collection and a flat screen. The door can be locked. Our kids all live " local ." So often times they stay up late and drink to excess. We live in a remote mountain location where the weather can change by the minute. When darkness descends it is tricky driving. I mandate a one drink limit after 8PM if they intend to get behind the wheel. Otherwise it's the guest room.
I don't like having guests other than my kids. It encroaches on my space. I have to talk. I have to interact. I have to relate. I have to be nice. I have to step up. I have to be on my game. One misstep and Diane eats my lunch. No politics. No controversy. No cigars. No discussion about where or what my tattoo will be about. If we have dinner guests I go to bed early with my Labs. I always talk to THEM. I watch Diners, Drive -Ins and Dives in bed and think about what I will cook for dinner tomorrow.
