When it's cold outside

Grandpa Sol used to tell his eldest grandchild: “Stay calm and cool at all times.”

Not easy to follow as so many triggers to be anything but calm occur -- often daily. That said, I more than followed that advice yesterday.

No clock really existed on my time.

I knew I would pick up my daughter, visit mom and go to the mall with Shelly and there were some approximate times involved but nothing hard and fast.

What struck me later after I dropped off Shelly outside Nordstrom’s to drive around to what’s considered the mall’s main entrance was my consideration of others in the bitter cold.  The drive around involved a route between one of the massive parking garages and a southern entrance.

I found myself whether or not I encountered a “Stop” sign or a crosswalk lacking one, or nothing at all just waving the pedestrians who were seeking to  cross to proceed rather than wait for my car to pass.

So it took a bit longer to get to my destination, find a spot and meet up with Shelly as the pre-arranged spot inside.

But, when it’s cold outside, it just makes sense to let those "facing the elements" to proceed.

Just like everyday life: let people go ahead of ya and get where they need to go!

You should drive down Seventh Street in Garden City. The rule there is that the pedestrians always have the right of way. The moment you step into the cross walk the vehicle on the roadway stops. It always amazes me and makes me smile.
