Childhood Favorites

I was recently shopping for food to have in the house for the times when my grandchildren were over. As I looked up and down the aisles, my eyes were struck by a familiar can, Chef Boyardee Beefaroni.

I picked up the can and smiled.  I could still hear the commercial in my head, “We’re having beefaroni. . . beef and macaroni. . .  beefaroni is fun to eat. . . “

As a kid, I loved Beefaroni.  While holding the can I was immediately flooded with memories of my mother heating up a can, or two, for lunch on a weekend afternoon. My brother, sister, and I would sit around the kitchen table together and eat, with my mother hovering nearby.

I held that can and smiled for several minutes.  What childhood food brings back memories that make you smile?

Moms sweat baked cinimon noodles and cheese casserole every Saturday for late breakfast after Synagogue. I can still smell it in the oven.

McDonald’s. And I do it once a year, still. This year is December 24th. You’re welcome to join me.

Love this. For me it’s a pot or spoon or bowl that was my grandmothers that we used as a kid. When I use certain things now the memories flood back.

OMG!! Swanson fried chicken with mashed potatoes and baked apples. Always finished the chicken and mashed potatoes. NEVER the apples.

We had McDonald's every Wednesday night because my mom played canasta on Wednesday night. My go to order was their filet of fish sandwich. (I never liked hamburgers). There was something about that fried fish with the melted cheese and tarter sauce. So good!!!!

Yes!!! I actually, still, make Fluffernutters, but Weight Watcher friendly. I use healthier bread, PB2 (don't eat it plain because it tastes nothing like peanut butter) and I measure out the Fluff. Definitely not the same but every so often it just hits the spot.

My mom was never a cook but I cannot tell you the number of wooden spoons that live in my utensil drawer.
