A Shiva Call

Categories
Lifestyle

I am a member of a quarterly Gotham breakfast group (pictured).  Members are Corey, Bruce Swicker, Robert Intelisano, David Oralevich, Craig Shink, Alan Kreit and David Abeshouse.  At our most recent breakfast we discussed the sad news of the passing of David's beloved younger brother Adam and resolved to attend the Shiva together at David's house.

A Shiva is a Jewish tradition of mourning the death of a family member that involves a seven day period of formalized observance.

We (Corey, Robert, Bruce, me and my wife Joanne) car pooled from Christopher Morley Park and, at the suggestion of Insurance Doctor (and Pizza Crawl Impresario) Intelisano, enjoyed a pre Shiva lunch at Dario's in West Hempstead where we all agreed we experienced the best pizza ever.  Focaccia crust was one of the succulent key ingredients.

Suffice it to say, it was a delicious start on the way to fabulous deserts and other catered food at the best Shiva we ever attended.

Calling it the best Shiva is not meant to be disrespectful or counter intuitive, but it just was, the best!  From the well balanced mix of people, to the fellowship, the conversation, the food, the ambiance, the exclamations of condolences to the down right positive humanity!

In a way, it was networking in its broadest, finest, best and most loving manifestation.

Rest in peace Adam!

Thank you, Fred, for attending, supporting, writing, and being a good friend.
Daniel Schwartz

Glad the group paid it's respect in a nice way. If I was local I would have attended too. My condolences to Adam.

It is, and was, an honor to offer condolences in a personal and traditional way.
Shelley Simpson

May Adam's memory be a blessing. This is a reminder that friendship is marked with both joy and sadness.

Sounds like the perfect shiva. Love, food, friendship.

David, so sorry for the loss of your esteemed brother and best friend. May his music be his legacy to your family and the world.

Wonderful story of a Life well-Lived. All we can ask for is fulfilled. Reminded me (of course) of my own brother - also no longer alive, except in my heart and brain. That is sufficient for me, as I can hear his voice always.

Fred is always all of those things. We are all very lucky to know him, and you. I once wrote a song called "True Love Never Dies". It was one of my favorite self-penned lyrics, because it was so real.

David, so sorry for your loss and sending condolences to you and your family.

David, there are never enough words, JUST STAY WITH THE MEMORIES, as long as he is remembered he is never gone.
ODEY RAVIV

I second all of the comments and Fred's blog was just perfect. Supporting David and his family in this difficult time is truly a Mitzvah. I was moved to be with David and his family and friends in remembering Adam.

I too attended Adam's Shiva, yesterday afternoon, and was so impressed by meeting his wife Maria. What a wonderful testament to Adam's memory Maria is; she and their daughters, no doubt with David's guidance, will continue to keep Adam alive through his Classical Music Foundation and Recording Studio. David and his family are very special people so yes, a special Shiva it was. My condolences to all the family. Adam and his music will continue to be a blessing! Thank you David for sharing the NYT Obit and your friendship
Bruce Swicker

All true, and well said! We all know, however, that every Shiva that Fred attends is his favorite Shiva! RIP, Adam Abeshouse. May his memory be a blessing!
