Blast From the Past

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to create a “half glass full” occasion.  My son and his girlfriend just returned from a (fantastic) trip to Lima.  The problem was that their flight was cancelled and so they had to rebook at the last minute.  Add to the story – they live in Lynchburg VA.

As my luck would have it, the best flight they could find took them through NYC to JFK Airport – with a five hour layover.  How could it be possible that I might miss an opportunity to hang with them?  Not me!  So, I invited them to lunch at the TWA Hotel.  Talk about a blast from the past!

I have distinct memories of the original TWA terminal.  Walking through those doors to the wide expanse of red everywhere is like going back in time.  I know that is the purpose – but it worked well for me.  Back in late high school/early college, going to the terminal to watch the planes come in was an actual activity and destination.

Of course, the “Twister Room” did not exist back then and you could not just go out to an aircraft waiting to serve you a drink on the tarmac.  But now you can.

And to top it all off, it was great to see my kids smiling faces -- and their many, many photos of sea lions and sand surfing.

Have you been to the TWA Hotel? I know . . . maybe a Gotham cocktail hour!

I am dying to go there. If you watched The Amazing Mrs. Maisel, they clearly filmed the airport scenes there.

Fun place. Had a cocktail party with live music outside there by pool with open air views of runways!

I have not been inside, but see it every month from the Jet Blue Terminal 5 when taking the Air Train,. You get a nice view through the walkway leading to the terminal to and from the Air Train. I would like check out the inside for sure.

I have never been there. You remind me, though, of how back in the day in Detroit, a Saturday night date was often a trip to Detroit Metro where we could stand outside on a deck near the tarmac and watch the planes come in for hours. Then go grab a pizza or something similar.

Haven't been there. Great that you were able to get a quick, unplanned visit in with your son and girlfriend and have a special day.

It's on my list! Decades ago - probably 1969 - I was in that terminal, seeing a dear friend and her newborn daughter off as she headed to Japan to join her husband, who was stationed ther. Passengers gathered in the central, red-carpeted, part of the terminal before heading down long, narrow, red-carpeted arms of the terminal to get to the departure gates. I can still see my friend and her baby getting smaller and smaller as they walked into a seemingly endless tunnel.
