Disconnected

Categories
Lifestyle

Recently, as a consequence of an orgy of photographing and Facebook posting, my iPhone battery ran out of power and I was DISCONNECTED!

For better or worse, I instantly realized I'd become addicted and dependent upon that small (yet so big) window into the world.

To say I suffered withdrawal is an understatement. There was real anxiety too. It just so happened that we were out East and the day before we have made a sizable purchase and within seconds of the credit card sliding my phone buzzed with a text from the credit card card company questioning verification of such a purchase in an unusual location, saying if I didn't verify the card would be deactivated.

So once I was out of power I feared my buying power would be compromised too.

What's more, numerous photo and Facebook opportunities were lost. Lets just say I felt and was out of touch.

This experience is a manifestation of our virtual reality and a slice of what we have become.

What next?

Flu shot or tattoo?

Flu shot. No tattoos for this boy. Tattoo you?

Regain your independence. Try to leave the iPhone behind for limited periods of time. Remember it is a tool for you -- not the other way around.

I'm with Ben. Just last night I was out to dinner with my family and I got a notification as to an email I had received from an adversary in a hotly contested case. I made a conscious decision to continue enjoying my dinner, read the email the next day in the office, put my phone in my bag, and not take it out until morning. It was a great decision and one I will make more often.

Fred, I couldn't resist responding. Take an hour every day where you don't touch your Iphone. You will learn that life is fine without it. Just like the old time when someone called and I missed the call I used to say "if it is important they will call back".
Find the right credit card to approve your odd purchases. He had dropped a couple for misbehaving, such as declining purchases, because they deemed to be unusual. You can also alert your credit card company before traveling and have a not to approve purchases in a different state or country.
If I had been in your "shoes" I would have said "finally! freedom"

I agree with Rona. At breakfast today (networking, of course), my two companions and I talked about how our kids (and grandkids) are consumed by connectivity. Steve has a policy in his house for his three daughters (and himself and his wife) that all phones are "put to sleep" after 8pm, and are not allowed at the dinner table.

We have fairly similar rules, but the two older kids are away at college, and so I can't monitor them.

I think it's a "generational thang"...

FLU SHOT. That concerns me more than being disconnected.
You can just get a Mophie battery that fits around your phone. It is very healthy for me to have regular periods of disconnection. I love the idea of everyone stacking their phones up at the beginning of a restaurant meal and whomever picks up their phone first, pays the check.

Why not try deactivating noisy and distracting sound and vibration notifications/ functions and see if that works. As to power I do try to stay on ahead of that. Only on rare occasions do I get beat and that more involves not be careful about charging connections than just using up power. Often it appears when one mode goes all follow so best to stay away from trouble (if you can)

I recently traveled to New Orleans with a few friends...lo and behold we were not sitting next to each other. My Iphone (battery is terrible) died. I looked into my carry on bag and realized I had forgotten my book--The Manor (Gotham's next book)---felt odd and strange to be completely and totally disconnected.
Only so many times you can read the sky walk magazine. No TV's...I never felt so ill prepared before.
Sitting between two complete sleeping strangers...odd. Finally paid attention to the In Case Of Emergency speech--
I just don't like it, it did not give me an opportunity to "recharge my batteries"
Will never happen again.
Notice how there are charging stations everywhere in the airport...I LOVE IT!!

Left my iPhone home on the way to court today. By the time I got there, I was a mess: sweating profusely, shaking uncontrollably, light-headed, disoriented. I consented to an adjournment (or admitted my client's liability, I'm not sure), and went back home. Phew!

Id did allow you to talk to someone directly, a habit seriously dis appearing. I used to think that applied only to the young. Another silly prejudice. I find myself texting incessantly and live in the ether of the internet. And we have only just begun.

You need to work on your arms. I don't see any muscle tone. Get to the gym. Bench press and tricep pulldowns. Curls for the girls and the biceps. Try supplements...Branch Chain aminos and protein powder. The needle looks like it just slid right in. The black T-Shirt couldn't even improve things. Call Archer. He loses his cell phone 3 times a day. Sometimes for months at a time. Bob Lieb can probably push you around like he did to everybody else. Not me though. Boo Yah ! I'm witcha Bro !! Nice grimace by the way !! XXXOOO
