Drop Your Pants

No, I am not suggesting a new Gotham group or outing.

But, in New York this week, hundreds of people took the “No Pants Subway Ride”. Here is how it worked, I am told. Get on the subway with a group of people. When the moment is called, drop your pants, act as if nothing is happening – and then watch your fellow subway riders react.

This phenomenon was not limited to New York. More than 60 US cities and over 25 countries participated in the synchronized pants dropping event.

OK Gotham. Someone please explain this to me. I just don’t get it.

Why would people want to advertise their short comings (David Niven line to streaker at Academy Awards)?

It is the Annual No Pants Subway Ride, one of the first initiatives of Improve Everywhere, a group that puts on public improvisations for the enjoyment of those who happen to catch it live, and who subsequently catch it on the web (www.improveverywhere.com). The organization is the brainchild of this one guy, and I think began with him doing it in 2002. If you go to the website you can see the video of the original, which is a classic. The videos they post are hysterical, and the No pants ride is one of their flashmob initiatives, although they stage other initiatives as well on a smaller scale. Their projects have included placing an orchestra in a NYC park and letting whoever wants to conduct it, as well as Indiana Jones in Central Park and the Matrix in Macys. If you haven't checked out their website you are missing some truly classic, silly and occasionally wonderful videos and projects. I think the point is just to be silly and see other people's reaction, though it has really grown. Check it out. I would love to participate in one of their flashmobs.

I'd never participate in that sort of things... I don't have the legs for it.

Oh good - this gives me an excuse to do something I've always wanted to do. When I see these ridiculous young men with their pants sagging around their knees, I've always wanted to walk over and just yank them all the way down...Now I can do it and just say "Oh I thought you were part of a flash mob"....

NY1 News did a segment on it or I'd not have known. Some things I find "stupid" (stating the word the way done by my friend Tony who some in Gotham met). Included among them: dropping ones pants.

Susan, thank you for the website. That was very funny. I love the elderly in no pants. Very funny. A little weirded out by kids with no pants but overall, very silly. Thanks.

Although the No Pants Subway Ride is not one of my favorites improv everywhere has done some really funny things!

Last year I met some lovely people from Germany who asked me for directions on the subway platform. When we got on the train and saw 20 (or so) participants, the looks on their faces was priceless! I explained what it was and one of the men wanted to participate; but his wife wouldn't let him. LOL
