A gift

Having nothing of any importance planned last night I offered babysitting services to my daughter and son in law in Brooklyn. They were happy to have an adult night to themselves. I was even happier to have a night with the little one year old. I had a lot of time with her this week. Last weekend was her one year birthday party. Tuesday night they came to my step fathers 83rd birthday dinner. And Thursday I went over for my weekly visit. My mother used to say that she loved her grandchildren even more than her own children. I get it. As they say, grandchildren are God's gift for getting old.

And God's reward for not having killed your own kids.

One of the partners in the law firm next door to mine used to bring her baby, Kyle, to the office every day for the first year of his life. Whenever I got truly stressed-which was often-I would walk into their offices and say, "I need a Kyle break." Just holding him relaxed me significantly. And I didn't have to change a diaper or deal with him when he was cranky. There's nothing better than a baby, especially when you can give it back.

Enjoy the moments!
My parents and Shelly's often provided such services when needed here. In fact my mom and hers used to devote a day each so Shelly could work a couple of days a week.
Now just look forward to the day that grandchild comes over to teach you how to use some newfangled technology (Have not yet experienced but am aware of one who has as I am the father of that grandchild who flew down to set up his grandparents with an iPhone -- and of course a back story exists....).
