Parenting - What Do You Think?

Have you seen the video of the young boy, maybe 10 years old, melting down because his mother let him believe he had mistakenly purchased a $50,000 Mustang on the internet? His mother, the videographer, can be heard encouraging the boy's misconception and laughing in the background as he cries "I am going to have to sell everything I own" and his sister offers to share her allowance.

When interviewed, the mom -- and her son -- claim that the episode was all in good fun. It is important, she goes on, for children to learn to have a sense of humor and not take things too seriously.

I am all for the occasional prank -- but I have to say this story left me wondering about what this mom could have been thinking.

Did you see the video?

I think it's way over the top. How humiliating for this young boy. This will live on forever.

I've been known to play the occaisonal prank (like the time my wife and I got a fake winning lottery ticket for her brother (it was cruel but it was also a priceless reaction)).

However you feel about those things (I think it's a terrible thing for a mother to do to her son) I don't understand the craze for people to put moments like this online for the whole world to see.

I have been known to prank and, in fact, recently pulled a few good ones on my sister. But we are both adults and I would never put it up on the internet. He's 10. Who's the adult here?

Anything but good parenting involved hear. I submit that stress created by a parent helps not at all; and the episode described may be used to taunt in the future. The parent needs a spanking. Just totally irresponsible.

What is wrong with people? A mother did that to her son and then posted the incident on-line? Hello...

Pranks are what you play on college roommates, perhaps a colleague, or a sibling. Not on a little kid, unless its very good-natured, gentle and appropriate.

Another unfit parent out there...

It's truly amazing what others think is humorous. I shudder to think what this parent does for actual fun. Taunting at any age is simply obnoxious--and to parade it on the internet is more than a little creepy. My daughter is 10 yrs old right now and every day I am reminded how gentle her psyche is..

I didn't see it and you can have, as an intelligent person ,many thoughts about it. Sadly though ,what is comes down to is teasing to the level of humiliation. (by a parent no less) ...How quickly do you think he will forget that? There are some things we carry in our psyches forever, like that kind of pain.
