I Remember

Well, I think I do.

At this time of year I am reminded of what I always credit as my first memory.

I can’t say for sure that it was actually November 22, 1963 but at some point within the few days that followed, I was sitting on my dad’s lap in his recliner in our den. We were watching a news report of President Kennedy’s death. I don’t remember any words, but I distinctly remember my dad pulling me just a little closer and his feeling of great sadness.

Can you pinpoint your earliest memory?

Being in a park with my mother and looking up at the beautiful white clouds.

I have the same memory. Although, for me I seem to recall parts of the funeral, the casket being drawn through the streets.

Yes, I was under 2 years old, and my mother had just suffered a miscarriage. I didn't know what that meant, but I knew she didn't feel well. I have described that day, and the layout of the apartment (of which there are no photos) in which the 3 of us lived briefly at the time. My parents have confirmed that the details reflect actual memory, because they never talked about that event, or for that matter the layout of the apartment.

If it has to be a date, then it would be June 6, 1968. I remember seeing Robert Kennedy‘s coffin being taken away on a train or something.

In the same year, when I was five years old, I remember wrestling with my dog and falling down the steps and getting my knee somewhat impaled on a curtain rod that my dad was putting up. Still have the half moon scar in my knee!

I am not certain I could, hmmmm.

Lying on my middle brothers bunk bed when he was in school, I was probably three. He never let me on it and I just had to see what it was like.

I remember my mother bringing my little sister home from the hospital. I was two years and two months old. I remember her putting me in a chair and putting a pillow on my lap to hold her. But we also have a picture of it. So knows how “reliable“ this memory really is. Lol. They say all early memories are amalgams. But I really feel like I remember it. I also remember dust motes in the sun coming in the window of my childhood room.

My parents and aunts and uncles spent a few summers in a bungalow colony in the Catskills. I was about 2 and my cousin Michael tried to run away with my doll carriage; I chased him down and kicked him (hard)...you can imagine where! I don't know if he remembers, but I sure do!!
