"It Happened So Fast!"

Do you know what I mean?  Did it ever happen to you?  Did something suddenly come out of nowhere unexpectedly and happen so fast?

It happened to me last week.  I was driving along the Grand Central Parkway, in lane and observing the speed limit, when two cars came upon me weaving through the traffic as if in a careless contest or race.  You’ve seen them and have to marvel at their elan and daring.

And then it happened, a third car in front of me changed lanes suddenly without signaling, upsetting their rhythm and dance.   One racer swerved out of harm’s way, but too much so and roared on to the right shoulder of the road and, trying to correct, lost control and spun in front of me in a seemingly slow 360 degree circle across the traffic and slammed into a stanchion on the left coming to a dead stop.

It happened so fast!

I experienced the same thing a few years ago on the Northern State. So fast and yet, so slow, as the car spun out of control in front of me. Luckily, a split second kept you from being hit.

Thank goodness you were not hit too! Yes, I remember on the FDR Drive several years ago, it was a clear day, only 2 cars in front of me. One struck the other in the side and they both swirled in opposite directions across the roadway, leaving an opening for me to escape. It was shocking!

I’m always trying to impress upon my kids that life challenging moments like that can happen so fast.

Gratefully you we’re not injured, I hope the injuries to others were kept to a minimum. As a village court justice I am always trying to impress upon the many speeders, especially the young ones, wihat the result of their actions can actually be.

Thank God you were not hurt. It happens so fast - and randomly.

Paul's point carries.
You need to be aware of what around you; thus the risk of playing with the radio, fooling with e- devices in car, other moving entity or on foot.
article in today's Newsday maps out accident with fatalities 2012-2016 across LI. Speeding and / or alcohol a factor in many but not all so it supports my point above.

Greetings from the Northern State where traffic is moving nicely this morning. Car dancing is the domain of irresponsible alpha males driving 2000 pound deathmobils. And thus we have the story of negligence and why so many innocent men, women and children are mamed and killed in a nano flash.
Thanks for the reminder, Fred.
nano second.

Thank goodness you are okay. Avoid the Belt Parkway at all costs.

Aturtle was mugged by 9 snails. When the cops asked if he recognized anyone he said he couldn't because it happened so fast.

Drivers weaving in and out every day on the Southern State, Northern to a lesser degree and of course the Belt Parkway. I see it all too often. Most of the time it is why there is a tie up and heavier than normal traffic, only to find a car or two in a ditch, into trees or into the center median. Horrible and irresponsible drivers. Be safe out there...

Slow the game down . Focus . Breathe . Have a plan . Life can turn on a dime . Here today gone tomorrow . Most of us don't realize the effects of a 40 mph collision . And who even drives that slow . The rate of closure of a head on at 40 mph is 80 mph . Double . Seat belts , shoulder harnesses . Situational awareness . Escape plan . I escape to my zen . No distractions . No radio , books on tape , cell phone . Preferably nobody else in the car . 10-2 hand position on the wheel . Complacency kills . There is no shortage of assholes on the road . One around every corner . Slow the game down . The 100 mph fastball will look like a cantaloupe . In SLO-MO no less . Check your tire pressures, tread and alignment . Brakes . Nothing is fail safe . Get as close as you can . Pay attention . Clear your mind . Humans are flawed.

How scary!! I drive a lot for work and I often see the dance you're describing. I think Neil's advice is right on point. Unfortunately, we cannot control how others behave or, in this instance drive. We can only control our own behavior.
