Patronizing The Comic Book Store

Categories

One of the pleasures (rights) of being a grandparent is indulging (spoiling) the grandkids.

Just such an occasion occurred this past Sunday when we accompanied my son Alex and his son Shawn to the Grasshoppers Comics store in East Williston.

We arrived when it opened at noon and had the luxury of being the first and only customers.

Our son Alex has been a comic book aficionado since his boyhood and it was an unexpected pleasure to hear him engage the owner saying "I have a lot of pretty seminal stuff from the 80s".

Just as I helped finance that collection, I was there to continue that scholarly tradition with Shawn.

"Thor" is Shawn's favorite Marvel Comics character and he had free rein to explore the Thor section and the rest of the store (see picture) and with the help of the owner and Alex he continued to enrich his reading collection.

A few doors down from the comic book store is venerable, old school, Hildebrandt's luncheonette, which I first patronized as a boy, where we lunched and ended a perfect afternoon of rich family tradition with dishes of homemade ice cream.

It doesn't get any better than that!

Love this! I got my love of reading from my Mom; and have happy memories of us sitting in the living room quietly reading our respective books and enjoying being together...though we were in separate worlds.

I remember mayor LaGuardia reading the comics over the radio during the newspaper strike

When I was teaching remedial reading years ago, comic books were a wonderful reading incentive for even the most difficult students.

Brings back memories of my earlier comic book endeavors. For me, I was an avid collector and when I couldn't keep up with story lines, I collected for potential value and having an entire series. I got out of hand eventually and I gave it up. But do still have many in boxes from the 70's and 80's. Maybe worth something today?

What a nice family story. Family traditions passed on! I was not a comic book guy-baseball cards. But, my son got into collecting and still goes for Graphic Novels. He buys comics for his two young nieces.
