Escape From The Heart of Darkness

Categories
Holidays

When I was young I was afraid of the dark and everything that went with it, imagined, real or suggested.  So fearful that I had extreme trouble falling asleep.

Yesterday was the winter solstice, the shortest (day light) day of the year.  One could call it Heart of Darkness Day and say it is the worst or best day of year, as darkness bottoms and starts to bounce back to light.

Day Light Savings Time only confuses things (circadian rhythm) and in my opinion should be banished.

Some northern places are almost always dark.  It's just down right depressing.

Please see the above picture. I'll take dawn over dusk every time.

Can you see the Light?

I have always been “eeyore” yet I love this day. To me it means the days will begin to be lighter with each passing day.

Favorite day, as Paul said. Things get better and better and better! :) Happiest of holidays to everyone!

It's good that you do not live in Iceland.
As a child, I also was spooked by the darkness when trying to sleep at night -
always checked undr the bed first.
Bring on the Light!

I forgot to mention checking under the bed. Thank you for reminding me

First of all LOVE THE PICTURE - The other side of that coin - is when the sun never sets.
I was in Alaska in the summer time - and talk about messing up your circadian rhythm.
It's midnight and the sun is still shining.

I was also afraid of the dark - it’s funny how fear creates monsters when we think it’s the other way around.

Joseph Conrad notwithstanding the term Heart of Darkness has double meaning . Not so much the interior of Africa aka the Congo but the darkness or the primetiveness that every person possesses in his or her mind and heart . Into the abyss or black hole . But pulling your covers over your head will prevent your demons from getting you in the darkest of nights and the darkest of dreams . At first I would test my psyche as an adult and walk into the redwood forest on moonless nights alone . Hundreds of predator's eyes unseen to me watching my every move . Not good . I gave in and took the big dogs . They know everything . They see in the dark . We know nothing and see nothing . There are none so blind than those who will not see . Knowledge is power . The absence of knowledge is darkness . Do you run up the basement stairs like a grown man being chased by a wolf ? Or something worse ?
