I Wasted My Whole Youth on Vanilla

Categories
Food Blogs

When I was young the ice cream choices were pretty much limited to chocolate or vanilla with yucky strawberry bringing up the rear.   For whatever the reason, I always chose chocolate.  To be honest, I didn't even consider vanilla to be a flavor.  It was something neutral to spice up with chocolate sprinkles or sauce (Bosco).

I never allowed myself to savor the delicious vanilla bean flavor.  I never rolled it on my tongue and enjoyed the more subtle taste sensation.

How wrong could a young man be?  Today I'm all in for vanilla (pronounced "Wanilla" in an exclusive Hamptons restaurant).  My favorite is a swirl of DQ soft vanilla in a cone with chocolate sprinkles.

How about you?

PS:  Apologies to Rona who has previously blogged on this subject.

Wow - You're right about not considering vanilla a flavor as a kid In my youth there was ONLY chocolate. WE used to always stop at the Carvel on Northern Blvd. (next to Kiddy City)
and get brown bonnets :0).

Chocolate was and is my favorite and the darker the better - some places have Double Chocolate! For soft ice cream, i love a swirl of orange sherbet and vanilla. When home, chocolate syrup, even on chocolate ice cream but always Hershey's Syrup!

Last night in anticipation of this blog I enjoyed my DQ!
Flo Feinberg

What's DQ?
Vanilla is the new Chocolate? I am a mint chip or coffee anything fan, but when feeling particularly pure I might opt for vanilla....with dark choc chips!
By the way, we used Bosco (not Fox's U Bet) in eggcreams....remember them???
Daniel Schwartz

DQ=Dairy Queen.
I always loved vanilla and later in life could enjoy chocolate as well.
Favorite chocolate syrup was always Foxes U-Bet. Only way to make a true NY egg cream.
My favorite DQ is a vanilla cone dipped in chocolate coating (old style brown bonnet). I love the chocolate coating, freshly dipped, still a bit soft on the cold vanilla, then it turns hard and crunchy as you eat it. Yum.
Cayce Crown

DQ? That ain't even ice cream! Who knows what they put in that. There are so many fabulous organic ice cream shops in NYC, great ice cream abounds, vegan too. Give me salt caramel or espresso, no time for vanilla.

I had no idea what DQ stood for until it was interpreted. Again, I am with Cayce on this one, although we have wonderful shops here on LI as well---unfortunately for my vegan family members NYC still is the place. We keep begging all of the restaurants to open branches here on LI.
Daniel Schwartz

I believe there is a place for Premium Ice Cream and we all likely have our favorite shops and flavors. But sometimes you want a quick treat that has it's own fun and memory. DQ can satisfy that. No I would not call it premium and likely full of chemicals, but definitely something my family indulges on when down in Florida (much like a run to a Waffle House).

I don't think Vanilla is an acquired taste, I think it is all in the quality of the vanilla. Try Talenti or there is a new Italian Gelato that they have started to bring to the US

I thought I sent you a case of Fox's U-Bet awhile back . Bosco was good but I know Fox's Ubet and it ain't no Bosco . We make our own ice cream out yonder pardner . Hand cranked no less . Lots of farm fresh eggs and vanilla beans . Fresh cream and cane sugar . Yucky strawberry u say . How about blackberry from the vines growing in our corral . Creamy , velvety peach . This time of year when the stone fruit is ripe . Peach ice cream is an aphrodisiac . Yeah I'm witcha brother . A big bowl every night to help wind down the 7th 8th and 9th at the Stadium on YES. Michael Kay . And Judy ? Who the hell drinks champagne with clams ? Track , Wall , SEE YA !!

One of the great lines in poetry are written above.

How can you be a true New Yorker and prefer Bosco over Fox's U-Bet. It's the equivalant of eating a pastrami sandwich on white bread with butter and mayonaise. UGH

Norm is right . Irving at the candy store in Westwood turned me onto Fox's Ubet in 1954. I keep a case in my pantry in California. Also I have to plug Mr. Softee as a stand alone experience . Cayce is right though . It's manufactured from factory sludge in Slovenia. But it's so good ! Good Humor not withstanding .

Just seeing this!!! Thanks for the credit!!!

I am and always have been a vanilla person, especially soft serve, i.e. Carvel, or Marvel in Lido Beach, the absolute best. And, if you go to Marvel, you have to get their vanilla cone with the mix topping, it includes chocolate sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, cookie crunch and other great stuff. So good!!!!!

My best "vanilla" story is that when I first moved in with my current husband, I had gone food shopping. I bought vanilla ice cream for myself and my children and chocolate for him and his children. The first night I came home from work my mother in law was watching the children and she had the pint of vanilla in her hand. She was telling the kids that someone made a mistake purchasing vanilla ice cream, it had to be returned. Before my daughter could open her shocked mouth and respond I told my mother in law that we preferred vanilla. I think that was the first, and last, time I ever saw her speechless.
