I Wasted My Whole Youth on Vanilla
When I was young the ice cream choices were pretty much limited to chocolate or vanilla with yucky strawberry bringing up the rear. For whatever the reason, I always chose chocolate. To be honest, I didn't even consider vanilla to be a flavor. It was something neutral to spice up with chocolate sprinkles or sauce (Bosco).
I never allowed myself to savor the delicious vanilla bean flavor. I never rolled it on my tongue and enjoyed the more subtle taste sensation.
How wrong could a young man be? Today I'm all in for vanilla (pronounced "Wanilla" in an exclusive Hamptons restaurant). My favorite is a swirl of DQ soft vanilla in a cone with chocolate sprinkles.
How about you?

Vanilla is the new Chocolate? I am a mint chip or coffee anything fan, but when feeling particularly pure I might opt for vanilla....with dark choc chips!
By the way, we used Bosco (not Fox's U Bet) in eggcreams....remember them???

I always loved vanilla and later in life could enjoy chocolate as well.
Favorite chocolate syrup was always Foxes U-Bet. Only way to make a true NY egg cream.
My favorite DQ is a vanilla cone dipped in chocolate coating (old style brown bonnet). I love the chocolate coating, freshly dipped, still a bit soft on the cold vanilla, then it turns hard and crunchy as you eat it. Yum.

I am and always have been a vanilla person, especially soft serve, i.e. Carvel, or Marvel in Lido Beach, the absolute best. And, if you go to Marvel, you have to get their vanilla cone with the mix topping, it includes chocolate sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, cookie crunch and other great stuff. So good!!!!!
My best "vanilla" story is that when I first moved in with my current husband, I had gone food shopping. I bought vanilla ice cream for myself and my children and chocolate for him and his children. The first night I came home from work my mother in law was watching the children and she had the pint of vanilla in her hand. She was telling the kids that someone made a mistake purchasing vanilla ice cream, it had to be returned. Before my daughter could open her shocked mouth and respond I told my mother in law that we preferred vanilla. I think that was the first, and last, time I ever saw her speechless.
