Stranger in a Strange Land

One of the best books I read when I was young was Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land (Biblical phrase) which has been referenced frequently in popular music.

Well I am no longer young and I feel as if I am a stranger in a strange land when, for example, I get on the subway in Long Island City along with the throng transferring from the Brooklyn train which parades by sporting their art, tats and sleeves on their arms, legs, faces, chests, backs and who knows where else.

It is not for me to pass judgement on this generational statement, but I do notice and wonder.

I loved that book - and yes I grok what you're saying - thanks for inspiring me to read it again

*WOAH* That book had a HUGE impact on my life. Stranger in a Strange Land & Mists of Avalon impacted my view of the world, what's possible & who I am.

Am looking forward to the movie as well...

We are so much more alike than we are different. Yes, #45 too. Not that I want to ride the subway with him...

Also Ray Bradburys The Illustrated Man. Each picture had a story

It's a rapidly evolving or devolving world accelerated by social media and a 24 hour news cycle. I can hear Leon Russell singing Stranger in a Strange Land; ironically it is a song I listen to while in the subway.

so many books to go back and re-read. Thank you all for bringing me back. I have saved some of the more special pieces of clothing from my "youth", and am certain that as I walked through the streets of Boston and Manhattan in the 70s with my friends many watching us come and go were feeling what you have expressed Fred.

I can't believe you wrote about that book!! I recently downloaded it to reread.

In a figurative sense my name is Gershom (Exodus 2:22) for I have BEEN and maybe still AM maybe not from This earth but from a place close by . I have walked the jungles of Angola at night. Alone and lost . I have walked the streets of Colombo in Sri Lanka followed by small children with fly infested faces. No.... Not feeling from this earth . And now in my seventh decade I feel more than ever to be a Stranger in a Strange Land . In my own country. Divided in a greater way than I could have ever thought . Separated from life long friends by an ideology that snuck up on me much like the aging process Fred talked about last week . Tough times to be from Mars .

Who then WOULD you ride the subway with if not the President of the United States?
