Jefferson Crowther is the father of American Hero, Welles Remy Crowther, the legendary 24 year old "Man in the Red Bandanna", and the son of Bosley Crowther, renowned film critic for the New York Times from 1940 until 1967.

That's a lot of greatness to be sandwiched between, and yet, in his way, Jefferson is the greatest Crowther of all.

I say that because I know Jefferson up close and personal: to know Jefferson is to be with an extraordinary sensitive, cultured, mannered, emotional and kind man.

Whenever I am with Jefferson a caring sense of affection wells up within me and sometimes, truth be told, I find myself hugging him.

To have gone through what he and wife Allison were confronted with, the loss of their hero son on 9/11, and still be so kind, nice and positive is beyond me.  They have harnessed their grief  and worked so hard to preserve Welles' legacy of bravery to make us all better people. They have converted an American tragedy into an American miracle.

It is Alchemy: abject evil has spawned such ample good!

The Crowthers formed the Welles Remy Crowther Trust to channel well meaning contributions back into the community to make it a better world.

Cayce Crown blogged on Wednesday about our amazing Gotham Book Club lunch on Tuesday celebrating author Tom Rinald'is "Red Bandanna" book about Welles and the Crowthers were present and it was enhanced by the attendance of three of our own Red Bandanna honorees.  It was so great!  No one who was there will ever forget it.

I could go on and on...

I just want to hug Jefferson!

Was really pleased to see the full page ad for The Red Bandana in this past weekend's Sunday Times Magazine. Gotham also secured recognition for Jeff and Allison and their heroic son Welles on Gotham's first Citifield visit when the Mets held a memorial ceremony on 9-11-14.

Jefferson has taken the time to have dinner with and speak with my sons about Welles and what it means to be a hero. He is such a good man and I am proud to call him a friend.

As you have said, it was an unforgettable moment. Welles, Alison and Jefferson are inspirations for all of us.

Just when I needed inspiration ..... these people are put in my path. I have so much respect
and gratitude to know people such as these. TheY are an inspiration. And Gotham is certainly an incubator for goodness and generosity -IT'S better to give.... THE LOVE YOU MAKE IS EQUAL TO THE LOVE YOU TAKE....

Agree with all my heart. Jefferson and Allison were guests on Family Comes First (Vincent Russo's and my tv show on Telecare). They are generous, compassionate and "real." And their family story inspires all of us to live the best that is in us.

Fred, you said yesterday at the Gotham LI meeting that this past Tuesday was the greatest day in Gotham history, because the "MITRB" book was discussed at the Book Club with the author and Jefferson present. In a similar vein, this may have been your greatest blog post in all the years of Fridays With Fred. Just sayin'....

Jefferson's willingness to show emotion is another of his great attributes and such an indicator of deep inner strength. His constant positive attitude reminds me of another honorary Gothamite, Esther Geizhals. How they stay positive after all they have been through is so bleeping inspiring and helpful in these trying times.

It was truly a magical day. Thank you John and Julie for putting it all together.

Jefferson and Allison's ability to speak for Welle's in beyond words...

The Bandana Luncheon was an unforgettable and inspiring event. Seeing the elegant parents, Jefferson and Allison, talk with love about their wonderful son, Welles was
extremely moving. Their choice of Tom Rinaldi as the communicator of their story was spot on.
Truly a Gotham highlight event for all who were lucky enough to be there.

Welles Crowther IS a hero . Heroes should not be spoken about in the past tense . Heroes ARE heroes and not were heroes . I also feel that the title hero is bestowed far too liberally . Jefferson is a hero in the way he has chosen to live his life after his son's tragic death. Bravo Jefferson Crowther you are a roll model that taught your son the same quality . I feel your pain Brother . But back to throwing around the term HERO . Was Sully a hero ? I don't think so . His training kicked in and his experience took over . Right place right time . Flight or Fight adrenalin . Do you face the music or do you hit the road ? If you are put into a bad spot do you ACT or REACT. How do you confront the danger ? Heads up or head up your ass ? A combat vet or a combat vet that rose above the rest ? An NYPD officer that prevails in a gun fight or just wearing the uniform ? Welles' red bandana was his badge of courage. I pray for the accidental heroes ! I am careful how I use the term .

I think of you as a hero, but by your standards am I okay?
Vincent Russo

Victoria Drogin and I have been blessed with the pleasure of having Jefferson and Allison on our show - Family Comes First. We were able to gain further insights into Welles' childhood life as well as his defining moments in the Towers - a true American Hero. God Bless Welles and the entire Crowther Family.
