Some of you will know right away what my blog is about.

With the city running out of phone numbers, new area codes pop up with some regularity. In fact, New York City currently has six area codes.

But I remember a time when all of New York City was in the 212 area code and the exchange was tagged by its name first, not by its number. My Brooklyn phone number started with TW1, or Twining 1. I remember a friend whose phone number started CL6 – Cloverdale 6.

Do you remember your first phone number –and did its exchange bear a name or number?

My number was 536-5181. Always a 516 girl!!

We had a second phone number-that was before the days of call waiting. But I was never allowed to give it to my friends. That was my Dad's business number. Looking back it's funny how 5 of us were able to exist with one phone number but now we have two landlines, each with call waiting, and our kids each have a phone.

Name: Edgewood -- so the # started with 516-ED3-.... A simpler day and time.

Yup, I lived in Rockville Centre as a young child and my phone number began with RO6, never really gave it a thought. My family moved to Woodbury and we had all numbers. Actually so many people I know (the younger generation) are giving up their landlines and only using their cells. Although we have numerous landline numbers if you dial those they are rarely ever answered, and embarrassingly we rarely remember check messages--only if we see the light flashing. Everyone calls on the cell--landline is fallback these days.

Fi3...
Fieldstone but I took the # with me. The only difference is 718 taking over for the 212.

I too was an 891 in Brooklyn and I do remember "Twining 1" or TW1. Our phones were all rented back then from NY Tel and then NYNEX and were all rotary dialed, no push buttons. Now, I can't think of anyone that has a hand set attached with a wire.

Fieldstone 3, no area code needed. (Corey and I grew up in the same neighborhood, but he's younger.) Cousins were Flushing 9 and my father's office was Spruce 6.
