No "Hate"

While we were in Hawaii recently, we were told that there is no word for “hate” in the Hawaiian language. I am not sure whether it's true. But we heard it several times.

Nevertheless, the notion that there is no word for “hate” in a language is a beautiful thing. Imagine (with a nod to John Lennon) a culture developing without the need to find a word for “hate”.

Imagine being able to give our children no need for the word “hate”.

I hate when I hear someone spew "I hate that"!

My mom does not like when I use that word, she thinks it's too harsh. I should dislike something...not hate it/or anyone.

I try to use it less and less---

I once heard someone say that the opposite of love is not hate, it is indifference. Caring versus not caring. Hate carries with it a weight of feeling, albeit negative. Which is worse? Hate or indifference?

Vic, lest you think that we don't care to respond...I think it depends on the context. Hatred would be "worse" in some situations, and indifference would be "worse" in others. Just my 1.967857865 cents.

In my house we try not to use the word "hate". My kids have learned to say instead "dislike with a hot burning passion." I can't take credit for that. I stole it from a friend.

"have no use" remains one of my preferred phrases. When used around my house, "I hate you" is a sign of respect and love.

I would rather have someone be indifferent to me than hate me; far less dangerous. No one ever did violence to someone because they were indifferent to them.
