The Luxury of Cold Air

It is hot outside, really hot.  And I am a fan of cold, really cold.  Artificially cooled air that is, not the winter blustery kind.

I am a happy woman with air conditioning set in the low 60s at night.  Better for sleeping but I’m pretty sure my husband does not agree with me, which I glean from the pile of fuzzy sleeping socks he has collected over the years.

These days I am appreciating the luxury and privilege of my central air.  As an extraordinary heat wave takes over around the globe, I read an article recently that in England, air conditioning is uncommon.  Only a small percentage of the population has air conditioning in their homes.  According to a recent NY Times article, less than 5%.

Right about now, I wish I could share.

I am a happy member of the 5% and I have only used A/C when I lived in FL and then only a bit every day to clear out the humidity to avoid mold. Fans do the trick and are not as much of a burden on the environment.
As I pack to go visit my kids in GA in a few weeks, I will make sure to have a sweater and socks. My DIL will have comforters set out for me to use at night. She is like you, Nancy. She loves the cold.

Down south, it is a must. When I was in NY, our old 1930's house did not have central air. We had thought about getting it and even tried to get several contractors out to get quotes, but it was always a huge delay in timing and one excuse after the next why they couldn't come. When the season would end, we would find other house needs to deal with. So, we never had central air until now of course. It was a seasonal ritual putting up and taking down the window A/C's. I too like a cold room to sleep in,, not so much my wife, who wears the socks if too cold.

Lately sleep better with it cooler. Like Dan, I grew up in an old house with no AC. Not even window boxes. We opened the windows and sweated through the nights. Lol very much appreciate it right now.

As someone who has visited Europe in the middle of August, I'll add that the air conditioning they do have does NOT seem to pump with as much gusto as here in the states. After a long and hot day of sightseeing I found it quite hard to even find an iced beverage. When we got back I had a new found appreciation for our Whirlpool and its endless endless supply of ice cubes.

We converted our house to central air. Believe it or not, those contractors actually did you a favor by not showing up!

We ended up getting solar instead, which did nothing to increase the value of our house, so who knows.
