4 Seasons?

Categories
Lifestyle

When I was young there was a lovely character on the Howdy Doody show named Princess Summerfallwinterspring. Such a creative moniker!

As I grew older, I always remembered the Princess as we reveled in our good fortune to enjoy New York’s full 4 season splendor:  Spring and it’s green regeneration, sparkling Summer sun at the beach and colorful Fall foliage, but Winter…that’s the rub :(

We feel the cold more vividly as we age and begin to feel the warm pull of Florida just about now.

They may call us “Snow Birds”, but that’s okay--Key West beckons :)

Very true about age and the cold. I started noticing this about 5 years ago. Snow with it's immediate beauty very soon turns to the sinking knowledge that it had to soon be shoveled, plowed, salted and such, with numb nose, ears and chills throughout. I will likely miss that odd dynamic, but not the cold. Soon to be in my paradise down south, wondering how to cope with the eventual hot and humid summers that will be our new discomfort season...

The seasons offer us the perfect multiple-choice quiz. Each offers us something to enjoy and something to complain about. Which do you like better? I will choose "all of the above."

Like the swallows returning to Capistrano, the Klein’s must return to The Keys. So it is written. I used to not mind winter alas now I disdain it’s return.

Have to agree with Vincent. “Change keeps us alive” and able to appreciate differences. There are things we enjoy (and don’t enjoy) about every season, whether it’s spring mud along with the green of renewal, summer warmth plus the heat and humidity, etc. Carpe diem indeed! There's a Japanese decorating concept (I can't remember the name) where are you swap out certain pieces and put them away for a while so your eye can newly appreciate something different. The seasons are kind of like that. If they didn't change, I feel like I wouldn't appreciate the joys of each as much. With that said, February and March, after all the fun of the holidays and waiting for spring, are rough. LOL

Hmmmm...perhaps that's why my birthday is in Feb. and my wife's is in March -- it gives us something to do during those rough months -- celebrate birthdays!

I remember that Princess too. Now that I have been living in Cold Spring, NY, I appreciate and understand the change of seasons more than I ever did in NYC. I used to carry a small umbrella in a tote in NYC, and a wool scarf and they got me through most of the changes in the weather until I could get to a neutral space. This will be my second winter here. What I notice most is the lack of wildlife and bird variety that used to enhance the experience of living here. There is almost none, not in comparison to the old days when I used to come up for the weekend. Deer are dying from the wasting disease, birds including the bald eagles that have made a comeback have been poisoned by the chemicals people use on their lawns and plants, even the squirrels have been scarce this year. I do love the changes though.
