Road to Being A Culture Vulture

I was excited to get an invitation from the Gotham Tribal Council to take on the Wednesday Blog Spot in the Gotham weekly lineup.  Filling the site that was so passionately helmed by the inspiring Carly Meyer will be a challenge that I look forward to embrace.

As some of you may know, I have an avid interest in Movies, Music, Museums, Theater, Books, and Television. I look forward to taking the role of the Culture Vulture.  I will be on the prowl for the latest cultural event or activity that may pique your interest.

I give credit to my mother, at what set my course, for being interested in more than the “Hollywood” movies that play everywhere.  She took me to New York to see foreign and “art” films that whet my appetite for more unusual fare.  When I was 14, my parents took me to the Freedomland amusement park in the Bronx to see the jazz great, Louis Armstrong.  Little did I know that seeing live music would become a lifelong passion.

What or who inspired you to be interested in the cultural sphere outside the world of your television or radio?

My old childhood friend Marc E. He was way ahead of his age with an interest in museums, art and history at a very early age of 7 years old. My grandfather on my on my mothers side used to take my brothers and I as kids to the various museums (Natural History was my favorite) and botanical gardens of Brooklyn.

For me, parental influence was paramount. Both of my parents were classically trained musicians, and my father played piano professionally and taught it for many years. They were culturally sophisticated, exposing me to art, film, theater, and other avenues. Also, older friends were a secondary influence, for the more popular music branches. And then I in turn was an influence for my younger brother, who became a professional musician and producer/recording engineer (of international renown).

I suppose I was born with a curiosity gene that drove me to explore new things. Looking forward to your contribution to the Gotham Blogosphere.

My mother gave me 25cents a week for piano lessons. When people heard me play they wanted to know what i did with the money.

An innate pull to “go west”!
I grew up in Queens, my parents were recovering from their Holocaust experiences and so I had to forge my own (as well as their) paths. Fortunately I was born loving art, music and all things theatrical… also I was lucky enough to be able to hop on the Q44 (or Q44A) bus from the age of 11 (no, that’s not a typo… this was quite a while ago) and head west right into NYC!! Everything I needed, or wanted, was there!
So happy that you are doing this Odey!
Corey Bearak

At nine years, after already watching million dollar movies on channel (including several sword and sandals flicks such as Hercules, and Hercules Unchained), I saw The Avenger as part of a double feature at the old Glen Oaks Cinema. Slept over my paternal grandparents and discovered Edith Hamilton’s Mythology. Then found Aeneid, Iliad and Odyssey.

Glad you are into books more than ever Fred.
Love your story Dan about childhood influences. I loved Nat Hist Museum too!
David’s story of musical family influences is touching!
Norm my wife asked if he is always this funny? I said not always!!!
Flo a fellow culture nut started damn young as a NYC girl.
Ben-my father also named Ben would agree on your fate!!
Nice that a trip to the movies for Corey led to a mythology deep dive!
Shelley hit it square! Curiosity is the key.
See you next week.
