Up is Down and Down is Up

Whenever a difficult situation presents itself I am heard to say “Up is down and down is up.” So much so that people that know me oft times say it before me.

I can’t really say where I got it from (maybe it's because I’m left handed and think on the unconventional side of my brain), so I did some (Google) research and learned that in “1984“ Orwell wrote “night is day, up is down, black is white” and Carroll said in Alice in Wonderland “sometimes down is up and sometimes up is down.  Sometimes when you’re lost you’re found.”

Then there’s Dylan's The Times They Are A-Changin':

For the loser now will be later to win

The slow one now will later be fast

The present now will later be past

The first one now will later be last

To me it is all so profound.  It is another way of saying there are no absolute truths and we must remain open to all possibilities.  Never be a slave to conventional thinking as the "order is rapidly fadin’."

Up is Down and Down is Up?

Love it. There’s always another way to look at things. My version of this is “it’s not the end of the world.” Although the pushback from my kids is “not much is actually the end of the world.“ meaning: it can still suck. I guess I’m generally an optimist. Paul is the realist who tempers me.

I love ALL the quotes- and I think you perfectly distilled the sentiment in yours. My version is….. it doesn’t matter- and what if it did. Not exactly the same meaning - but a distant relative.

I appreciate your breakdown/analysis!

Another one I find myself saying a lot is: Life is short… Meaning acknowledge and move on. :)

I can remember feeling so scared when I was young, when life seemed upside down. Now, it’s like a 3 dimensional puzzle of possibilities. Black and white seems so plain these days.
Matthew Nowak

Flogging Mollies does a great cover of this song, and great to listen to especially around St. Patty's day.
Daniel Schwartz

I like also "Anything can happen". It keeps things possible no matter what.
Paul Napolitano

A very profound blog Fred. Maybe the best ever. Remind me to tell you the turkey story one day.

The more time I spend on this glorious planet the more I realize, everybody is right. Or you could say everybody is wrong. I prefer the former, the more expansive my view, the more accurately I view life.
Paul Napolitano

I could have written that same response to you! :) I tell everyone you have a very open and inquisitive mind… on all subjects.
Shelley Simpson

Change is a constant in life - it’s what adds texture to our journey. You also remind me that what we read and hear gets incorporated into how we view the world. And so it went with those quotations that ended up being reworked into your personal rendition.
Flo Feinberg

And my take on this is “I must have been a breach birth because I never follow the rules and usually do things ass backwards!
Up is down, black is white and it’s all good…
We’re still here! Enjoy every moment:)
Fred Klein

Ass backwards May be good in the end :)

The Wheel is turning and it won’t stand still. You can’t hold on and you can’t get off. If the thunder don’t get you then the lightening will.
The World may often not appear as what we think it to be and get let it spin one more day or one more turn around the sun, and it always returns to its Wonderous glory. My attitude is that wha the world is showing itself is “Is What’s So” That’s where you live in the space of “It is what it is” and yet as humans with thoughts we are able to manipulate our thoughts and dreams and from within learn to create a new reality that is consistent with up is up and down is down. I order to effect this change in mindset we need to clear out our head trash, create a field of nothing and then be the cause of action in any possibility we can imagine. In our home hanging over the fireplace we have a saying “Think It, Dream It, Do It” Our six children have taken this to heart. They have taught them that the world will not alway be as it appears. They have the power to change it and this they have done as each aged 20-30 have found their way.

This was a good one, Fred. Also, I'd include Seinfeld: https://getyarn.io/yarn-clip/9287629b-544e-4aac-b6e4-9fddbafa6be3
C'est le monde à l'envers.

As kids, we used to pretend the ceiling was the floor and you had to jump to get in the next room. Also, the chandelier was like a fountain and the toilet was an impossible fixture.

Up was definitely Down and Vicy Versy.
Corey Bearak

Growin' up one of my fave songs was Ups and Downs.
