A Little Obsession

Coffee that is. My coffee obsession is not new. That, frankly, is very old.

It’s my manner of brew that has me a little obsessed. Honestly, until recently I was perfectly happy with my Keurig. It did the job, every morning, like clockwork.

But, during this extended time at home, I discovered the French Press and to be honest I haven’t touched the Keurig in weeks.

Funny, I think I enjoy the process of making the coffee almost as much as drinking the coffee. That plunge at the end says “I’m ready” and tells me my day is ready to get started too.

For those of my coffee friends out there in Gothamland, what is your preferred method of brewing?

French press on weekends. The best, very smooth. Takes too long for during the week when I'm generally rushing out of the house. So, the French press is a weekend treat. During the week, it's the Keurig and Starbucks French Roast Kcups. Love them.

I use drip variety I either mail order or pick up in The Village - Porto Rico on Bleecker off the 6th Ave. I blend a pot of decaf and regular Franjelica brewed “robust”into a metallic thermos pot that keeps the brew HOT. Drinking 2d mug as I draft this reply.

Some people can't sleep when they drink coffee. I'm the opposite. I can't drink coffee when I'm sleeping.

Rona, I am with you when I am rushing. Starbucks French roast in the Keurig. But coffee is one of the most dearly held pleasures and passions for us. We grind and then drip brew every morning. I say we, but that’s not true. Lol. Paul makes the coffee, he is the brew master, experimenting with beans and roasts and combinations, making the perfect cup. I am the grateful recipient, as I open my eyes to the aroma, and have the blessed experience of that 1st cup in bed. That gift from him every morning is one of the most treasured and lovely things in my life. :)

We have tried the French press, and it is wonderful! I think we tried it during one of the blackouts. Nancy, you have inspired me to pull it out again!

We similarly ditched the Keurig for the French Press (which I had used many decades ago, at my first post-college apartment -- not the same one, of course).

French Press has been our way of making coffee for decades. Truth be told, I like the coffee from the truck on the corner too. It's a completely different experience and equally satisfying.

French press is too much of a process for the us. We use the Keurig daily for both coffee and hot water for tea. I like experimenting with different K-cups. I enjoy the Kauai blend and Starbucks Italian Roast.

Thermos! Great idea Corey. I struggle with that second cup -- can't leave it in the press too long.

Truth be told, I've had a french press for years and didn't get the hang of it the first time round. Coffee came out too strong and bitter. But I've learned tricks about (a) coffee/water ratio; (b) types of coffee I like; (c) letting the water come down off the boil; and (d) stirring the grinds after a minute with a non metal spoon. Sounds like a lot to do but it really isn't.

Thermos - great reminder, Corey! I'll need to do this when I go to my office. I could do the drip coffee there, but don't like cleaning the filter! :)

I share your passion for coffee, Nancy! My morning cup is what I call French press without the press. I simply pour hot water over espresso grinds and let them sink to the bottom. My favorite is Bustelo. If I need a second cup in the afternoon, I make a "bulletproof" coffee I learned to make from my nephew. It's a brew or espresso , with butter and coconut oil, blended with a little whirring device. I didn't think I'd like it but it's delicious!
