Bicycle, bicycle, bicycle

I expected it to be a lengthy process to assemble yesterday but it was unwrapping process that I found excruciating. Shelly’s new bike – the first she owned since our marriage – arrived Friday eve. She ordered it as last week began after a discussion with our son’s fiancee` who got hers at the end of lat year. Assembly required absolutely no tools. While a QR code connected me to a lengthy on-line assembly guide, I actually figured it out without any reliance on that. Shelly plans to purchase her first-ever helmet tomorrow. Shelly’s new bike actually folds up for easy transport. She already shared intentions to be “delivered” by this commentator to a place to try out her new device. Any recommendations?

P.S. I find it so interesting commenting about a bike. Usually my discussion involves bikes v. Buses; I often chat about how the manner of the installation of certain bike lanes occurs in such a way to pre-empt the installation of bus lanes where smart thinking would have facilitated both. Queens Boulevard exemplifies a location where the installation of a bus lane would serve so many more riders per hour and per day; the numbers are not even close, but the bike lane there pretty much precludes the installation of a needed bus lane where it would prove most practicable.

P.P.S. And even more interesting talking bicycles after last week’s blog.

As a kid my bike was my freedom to roam. At least until I reached my teens when girls didn't ride bikes any more so I stopped. As an adult the bike was great for getting back and forth to the town pool and for riding with the kids until I fell off trying to avoid a car that ran a stop sign. I stopped. That was it. We had bikes in Florida that we planned to use when we finally moved down. Among the signs that Florida was not for me - the bikes were stolen.

I agree with Shelly. I loved my bicycle as a kid. I could go wherever I pleased as long as I was home by dinner. Boardwalks are always nice places to ride. And any large park that bike trails.

Yes there are trails like the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway that we called the bicycle path when it lied outside Grandma Min’s Hollis Hills backyard, but I really liked APP for the various walking trails. Jonathan on Ed mapped them

Since my days as a Newsday delivery boy and a Schwinn Letour road bike enthusiast where I used to ride from Merrick to Jones Beach, I remain an avid cyclist.

A few years ago I bought a carbon fiber/ aluminum Cannondale road bike to complement my heavier, hybrid Trek cycle. I continue to ride year round when possible. The best and safest (no cars) route remains the Jones Beach bike path. Last week it was extended from Tobay Beach all the way past Robert Moses Causeway to Captree Beach.

I rode 32 miles on this maiden voyage and can’t wait to rinse and repeat. The best times to go when traffic is lighter is early am or for what I call “the sunset cruise”. You can park for free after 5pm and enjoy some of the best sight lines on the Island of the great South Bay.

I have been "forbidden" to ride a bike on the streets of Manhattan, requires a focus that is extreme and I am having too much fun to pay that much attention. Also, cabs. However, in EYW, it is not only the preferred transport mode, it the absolute most enjoyable way to get around and see all there is to see. So bring Shelley to Key West. #justaskFred

There were plans made a year ago last fall that would have included KW but COVID changed that; it would have occurred around this time last year, maybe a few days earlier.
