Last year at this time I blogged with great optimism how things looked up for my baseball team.  The season that followed failed to meet my expectations, especially on the pitching side.  Lost Thor before the season started and Stroman opted out.  Pitching depth never overcame such a deep loss; it reverberated on the bullpen as usually happens.  Nonetheless despite no signings of the top free agents at fielding positions 1, 2 and 8, the experts find great merit in the first roster being assembled under new ownership with a recycled/new front office.  I allow myself to exude optimism.

Frankie Lindor at short, Stroman acting super confident after accepting the Mets qualifying offer.  Cookie Carrasco giving the Mets another frontline starter and the recent signing of Taijuan Walker makes for a solid 1 through 4 while young lefty David Peterson who performed very well in short-season 2020 competes with Joey Lucchesi for the five slot.  And my team expects Syndergaard to return in June.

The unresolved status of the DH leaves open the question of where some players slot on the field but not in the (batting order) lineup.  Whether eight hitters plus a pitcher or nine sluggers, the batting order presents a nice puzzle as several players who slot top or middle of the order on most other clubs may find their names six through eight or nine (if DH applies) on daily lineup cards manager Luis Rojas makes out.

And what a cool lineup (1-8) based on Twitter handles alone:

@You_Found_Nimmo

@Lindor12BC

@mconforto8

@Pete_Alonso20

@TheRealSmith2_

@JeffMcNeil805

@JDDavis26

@Jamesmccann34

Put them in coach (paraphrasing Mr. Fogerty), they look ready to play, and I’m ready to watch. Grapefruit league starts one week from tomorrow.

Let’s go Yankees!

Mets look ready to challenge.
I heard out of MLB rating of top 100 players.
Mets had 3 in top 35. Impressive.

Will always have a soft spot in my heart for The Mets. My father's company had a box on the first base line in 1969. I was 8 years old and proudly brought my Mr. Mets doll, which most of them eagerly autographed for me. If I had that doll now. . . .

The starting pitching behind Jacob deGrom has intrigue but still has a few question marks. The BRIGHT lights in NY are very bright; will Carlos Carrasco pitch like an ace?

The Mets do have enough firepower offensively to win many games when adding in their pitching staff's expected success. The Mets should make the postseason in 2021.

I am cautiously optimistic about this season. As a Mets fan, I am used to "winning the offseason". I like the starting pitching and bullpen depth. It is very rare that starters pitching 200 innings anymore, so it is important to have decent 6/7 starters. That was a major problem with this team last season.

Cookie as an ace elevates Mets; happy if he’s a solid 2 a la Jerry Koosman; Stroman in same place thinks he is an ace so makes one think in June about early 70s Birds which featured 4 20-gamers.

Amen Corey! And Ray: I don't think we need worry about how Carrasco will respond to the bright lights of NY. He's pitched very well in the playoffs on the road against both Houston and at Yankee Stadium. CitiField? Fuhgettabout it!

Count me in for Nimmo leading off - at least vs. righties - but while Lindor may be our best player, he hasn't been as good a hitter over the last 2 years as Nimmo, McNeil, Conforto, and Dom.
