Giving Thanks

Categories
Holidays

I know it’s been the toughest of years, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to be thankful for.

Words like Silver Lining (in every cloud), glass half full and Bright Side come to mind as we fend and cope.

I know that I am very lucky and have a lot to be thankful for.  What about you?

I am thankful that the Supreme Court made a decision for religious liberty, and to issue it on Thanksgiving Eve, right before we were celebrating the Pilgrims, who came here for religious liberty, is so appropriate. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn and Agudath Israel of America, an Orthodox Jewish organization, alleged that the limits Andrew Cuomo placed upon Houses of Worship, violated their First Amendment rights of religious exercise. The Court agreed. As Justice Gorsuch’s opinion stated:

“It is time—past time—to make plain that, while the pandemic poses many grave challenges, there is no world in which the Constitution tolerates color-coded executive edicts that reopen liquor stores and bike shops but shutter churches, synagogues, and mosques,” he wrote.

Kudos to the Supreme Court.

This pandemic has afforded me many opportunities that would never have presented in the “real world”. Brought my family closer together and allowed me to slow down and gave me the time to be creative in ways that I keep discovering. I realize I am among the very lucky that has enough to eat -a roof over my head - and no school age children. So much to be thankful for...
Ray Walcott

I’m thankful for health, family, friends, and life!
Jane Jacobs

Yes, if you're not going to control those crushing crowds and singing in bicycle shops, you can't control it in places of worship. So what if religious services - which were NOT stopped - repeatedly have been shown to be superspreader events?
Victoria Drogin

Much to be grateful for. Hang in there and bring on the vaccines so we can exhale and hug our kids. Sigh.

In the minority, with three others who do not understand the Constitution

“Government is not free to disregard the 1st Amendment in times of crisis,” wrote conservative Justice Neil M. Gorsuch in a separate opinion. “At a minimum, [the 1st Amendment] prohibits government officials from treating religious exercises worse than comparable secular activities, unless they are pursuing a compelling interest and using the least restrictive means available.... Yet recently ... certain states seem to have ignored these long-settled principles.”
Gail Koelln

My mother died from COVID-19. I had a minor case in July. How is it OK to let people gather in super spreader groups, ignoring the impact on others, a bigger right than the right to life and health??? Is that not a compelling interest? Did you hear about the wedding in Maine where 50-add people created a super spreader event that resulted in over 170 testing positive who didn't even attend the wedding and 7 or 8 dying?
Shelley Simpson

It's been a rough one indeed and while not the roughest one I have faced personally, the global impact is one that gives me pause. I'm grateful so many are working hard to help and protect each other. I am grateful that I remain hopeful that we will come through this better, stronger and more aware of what truly matters than we were before.

I am sorry about your mother and all who passed, but only you and Jane mentioned super spreader groups. Perhaps check the case and the US Constitution first.
Carly Bentley

A world without spirituality and prayer, could be worse in the long haul. Some people need the law to help them navigate, others use common sense, while others use a combination of both. Whatever your choice, I am thankful for that choice, my family and friends. I don’t judge and certainly don’t tell anyone what to do or how to live. This COVID is so big, that we need science and prayer for the answers in order to stop it. My prayer is we are well on our way to herd immunity by this time next year and the problem under control in 3-5years.
Kelly Welles

My gratitude overflows for many of the reasons cited above. Though I have only consternation for a Supreme Court ruling that allows the First Amendment to “trump” health, food insecurity, epidemic impoverishment and national security. The Founders could not anticipate every eventuality.
Daniel Schwartz

Grateful tonstill be working and ablentonsupport my family. Health is up there too.

All true Carly. Also regarding herd immunity see below:

Moncef Slaoui, Operation Warp Speed's clinical adviser, signaled on Sunday that Americans could start getting vaccinated for Covid-19 within a day or two of the FDA's advisory committee meeting scheduled for Dec. 10.

"Our plan is to be able to ship vaccines to the immunization sites within 24 hours from the approval, so I would expect maybe on day two after approval on the 11th or the 12th of December," Slaoui said on CNN.

— Herd immunity could be reached by May, Slaoui also predicted, estimating that's when about 70 percent of the U.S. population would get shots.

Oh no! That pesky Constitution - the Founders (and later the Congress and the States) realized there would be tyrants like Andrew Cuomo and some of his Governor colleagues, and so the Bill of Rights was extended to the States. Thank goodness!
