Services COVID Style

In front of the television with the rabbi and cantor streaming live. I think I really liked this year’s services.

With the new year approaching, we talked about how to go to services. There were three options – in person, an outdoor service or streamed from our family room couch. We chose the last, with the idea that it would be safest for this year. That, it was.

But surprisingly, in addition to feeling safe, I also felt more involved in the service than any year before. There was something about being able to really hear every word, see the rabbi’s expression (well, at least in his eyes above his mask) and hear the cantor’s intonation matched with his expression. We had promised that we were going to dress for temple as we would have otherwise, but in the end opted for what I will call comfortable clothing. I think that kept us engaged for longer than usual.

I definitely missed the personal interactions of the new year experience. I really do look forward to seeing our friends and neighbors and catching up on a year’s developments. I suppose next year we will have to catch up on two years.

But for now, I conclude we had a very enjoyable and engaged experience.

COVID has changed so much.

We certainly did. Frankly, as I get older it gets easier. Just feels like a busy work day when I forget to have lunch.

It's interesting. I was thinking of rejoining for that purpose. I wonder if the temples will continue to do this.

It's wonderful that you enjoyed it. Our entire congregation was on Zoom with separate rooms for kids and teens who had their own services. I was part of the planning and so I was especially grateful when things worked out. I look forward to a time when we can be in a communal sanctuary; in the meantime, I'm certain our prayers all landed in the same place.

It was definitely interesting. The best parts were the Rabbi blew shofar the second day of Rosh Hashanah after services in the parking lot (he apparently did go outside to blow shofar to be on the safe side) and many congregants came and socially distanced to hear it. It was nice to see people and do some catching up. The even better part was last night, when the Rabbi went outside to blow final shofar, we could see his shadow on the synagogue wall from our porch and were able to hear it. We then raced inside to eat like always - we just did not have to go that far! It felt a bit more like the typical holiday.

This is wonderful! I love that while you missed your family and friends, your connection with the service was richer than expected.
