My Younger Self

I was giving a presentation recently about my favorite topic, networking. And the following question was posed to the group – what is the best piece of advice you would give your younger self about networking? In other words, if I knew then what I know now . . .

That question always gets me thinking. Truth be told, I admit to being completely unschooled and untooled about this thing called networking. I’ve learned along the way by picking up tips from others who do it so well. You know those people who are just connectors.

But that question keeps nagging at me. I think the best piece of advice I would give to my younger self would be to “just do it”. As a young lawyer, the process seemed daunting, but I know now that nothing happens when you just spend your day behind your desk.

What would your words of wisdom be to yourself?

Find about 5 "work" friends and meet every few weeks to hang out and talk about work. You will naturally try to help each other and over time (years) you will all be successful.

Always listen. You would be amazed at how much information is shared, even if not directed to you, that can be useful. Then follow up. Lending a helping hand, when not asked, usually is remembered well.
