Where Are Your Photos?

I went looking for some photos recently. I wanted to share some memories from when my kids were young with a friend.

When I use the word “share” however, it isn’t intended in the context of social media. I really wanted to sit at a table with old photos, stroll down memory lane, and physically give some to a friend.

But when I started to pull photo albums from where they are stored in my basement, it quickly became clear that from a point in time forward, I don’t own a single printed photo. When our phones became our cameras, we stopped printing photos.

Don’t get me wrong -- I enjoy having my photos with me on my phone. I visit some part of my electronic photo album every day. That said, I did have a melancholy moment missing the feel of a photograph in my hand.

I think I’m going to have to invest in a better photo printer.

I struggle to continue my photo albums

Shelly occasionally will print out photos. Not all photos are on my phone/ iCloud. Occasionally I move or copy photos to places I save depending on how I determine they should be filed. Sometimes I delete.

Send your digital photos out to Flickr or Costco or Apple, or whatever other service, and have them print up a photo book for you. The advantage is that you can curate your own photos into different themed collections easily.

And with each child the pictures dwindled to the point that all of Bethany's bat mitzvah montage photos came straight from the phone and the computer :( Thank goodness we can still order yearly school portraits!

I am having an issue with that right now. Tomorrow is Calli's birthday and I wanted to post a baby picture of her on FB. Unfortunately, those are all printed in photo albums in my house which is now 15 feet in the air...

Another thought, I guess our kids will never really keep print photo albums. Another tradition dying off in the face of technology.

I lost five years worth of photos that weren’t backed up, when I thought they were. So Steven Mancinli’s idea of a photo album is a good one.
