BINGO!!!!

About a week or so ago, a teenage prank in a small town in Kentucky led to headline news. The way the story goes, a teenager and his friends were passing by the local bingo hall and one dared the other to go inside and yell “Bingo”. With the line in the sand drawn, the dare was accepted and off he went inside the hall crowded with avid bingo players in mid game. “Bingo!!” he exclaimed apparently without much thought as to what might happen next.

Having disrupted the committed players, the loud “bingo” might as well have been “fire” in a crowded movie theater. The arrest came quickly and the teenager was carted off to the police precinct.

While the teen served no time, and was sentenced to a prohibition against uttering the word “bingo”, I still ask if too much was made of this situation. Granted, I am not a bingo player and I might feel differently if I played, but it all seems like too much attention to a high school prank.

What do you think?

Whenever I make a great connection I always exclaim BINGO!

The youth acted inconsiderately and needed an appropriate public spanking; whether this one made the most sense with the attendant PR and acclaim (notoriety?) remains a good question.

When I was a kid we used to go to Florida every Christmas to visit my grandparents. My parents used to like to go to the local "big stakes" bingo game at the Seminole Indian reservation. They still love to tell the story of how one night during the big jackpot (which was quite a few thousand dollars) a woman had a heart attck, keeled over and after about 5 minutes they covered her up with a blanket and finished the game before the ambulance arrived. The point of the story is, yes some people take bingo very seriously. Never mess with a bingo game.

All too often, we find our firm defending kids who did nothing more than the same behaviors my generation did regularly, with no consequences. The world has changed...

Riva's observation is interesting. My question is with what crime was he charged?

Clearly everybody in Kentucky needs something better to do with their time.

Too much was made of a practical joke by KIDS. The people in this Kentucky town have way too much time on their hands or perhaps are in need for a little more excitement in their life.

When I was young, kids did pranks we thought were hilarious. We made phoney phone calls, sent pizza and chinese food to neighbors, told people they won contests if they sang the song to the ivory soap commercial and we rang bells and ran away. We did stupid things like that because we WERE kids. It was a time when being a kid was not a crime.
