Ryan Turns Eighteen

Categories
Lifestyle

My step-son, Ryan, turned eighteen on Saturday (yes, he shares a birthday with our illustrious co-founder, Fred). As this was a milestone celebration for Ryan I wanted to write something special in his card. I wanted to offer him some wise advice that would be useful to him in his adulthood. I struggled to think of what information would have been useful to me at eighteen.

I filled up most of one of Ryan’s birthday cards with my words. When I finished, I realized that everything I wrote could have been summed up in five words: always go with your instincts. This is a lesson that I learned late in life but I have learned to realize the importance of.

What advice would you offer your eighteen year old self?

watch what others have done and do and try not to replicate the mistakes they made so you can learn what not to do.

I tell my son every day to just believe in yourself, no matter what, even when it seems like you shouldn't.

Both of my sons have milestones birthdays this month (18,21)---One piece of advice that has served me well;
No act of kindness is every wasted, always chose to be kind

Happy Birthday, Ryan!

Happy birthday Ryan. Remember each of us has both admirable qualities and qualities which we aren't so proud. Learn which to emulate.

What a great blog! Funny, I distinctly remember a blog I wrote similarly themed about my then 3 year old son and his "spider sense". I suspect your message has more impact at 18. Happy happy birthday to Ryan.
