I've Been Influenced

Categories

We had the conversation several months ago over lunch.  Some of the women in the office mentioned how much they love their cashmere sweaters. I had responded that I never owned a cashmere sweater, essentially because I felt they were generally very expensive.

I did not notice it initially but soon thereafter I noticed an ad popping up on my Instagram feed. The ad was for a website that advertised reasonably priced cashmere sweaters. After seeing the ad several times over many weeks, I finally looked at the website. The reviews were great (although I do not think anyone would post a negative review on their own site), the sweaters looked pretty and the prices were affordable. So, I ordered a sweater.

I really loved the sweater when I received it, so I ordered another. I loved that one also, so I ordered some gifts from the website. After I ordered the gifts, I came to realize that their Instagram ads worked on me; I had been influenced.

Have you ever been influenced?

Love them, actually. So many good matches…like the battery case on the iphone in my hand right now.

It's curious how social media sites know what is discussed over lunch. Seems you and the women in the office had some influence there, Just a thought...

Big Bither is always watching. Anything you do or say while on line is watched, listened to and and sold to vendors just waiting to sell to you. 1984 in 2021. Ok Google, Hey Siri, Alexa...

To be more specific, tracking technology! Facebook tracks you and your friends, so if they see you're together and your friend searched for something, they'll show that same ad to you assuming you two have enough in common it's worth for you to also see that ad. https://www.mcnuttpartners.com/why-we-see-digital-ads-after-talking-about-something/

I watched The Social Experiment. It's scary to see it in real life.

I recently noticed that every day I get an email from Microsoft. I cannot remember the subject name or find it right now, but it reminds me of things such as You said you would call Adele today. This means that Microsoft reads every email that I send every day and reminds me to follow through on whatever I said I intendedy o do. This is not good folks. There is no such thing as privacy any longer, Any idea who I can report this invasion to?

The above message about privacy was sent by me and somewhere picked up that it was from "anonymous."
