The Godfather Sayings

Categories
Movies

Recently Joanne and I stayed in on consecutive Saturday nights and watched Godfather I and II.

Our (unanimous) impression was that the original was better, if not far better, than II. It is so rich in color, music, composition, content, acting, writing and lessons.  And it is so eternally quotable.

Topical today is second son Fredo's protestations that "I'm smart and I want respect."

My favorite is Hyman Roth's "We're bigger than US Steel".  I can just hear Meyer Lansky saying it about the Syndicate.

Then there's (twice said by different Dons) "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse" which came to me in various versions from Teamster negotiators over my labor relations career during which I always remembered to keep my friends close and my enemies closer.  After all, "It's not personal.  It's strictly business."

Do you have a favorite?

P.S. Don't forget the cannoli...

I think the best thing is The Godfather Epic where the two movies are combined and are shown that in chromological order

Don Corleone: I knew Santino was going to have to go through all this and Fredo... well, Fredo was... But I, I never wanted this for you. I work my whole life, I don't apologize, to take care of my family. And I refused to be a fool dancing on the strings held by all of those big shots. That's my life, I don't apologize for that. But I always thought that when it was your time, that you would be the one to hold the strings. Senator Corleone, Governor Corleone, something.

Michael: Another pezzonovante.

Don Corleone: Well, there wasn't enough time, Michael. There just wasn't enough time.

Michael: We'll get there, Pop. We'll get there.

Don Corleone: Do you spend time with your family? Good. Because a man that doesn’t spend time with his family, can never be a real man.

I can see how he could feel that

I believe that my husband and I are the only two people-on the planet-whom have never seen any of the the movies. It sort of makes us special. :)

Sonny Corleone: What are you gonna do? Nice college boy, didn't want to get mixed up in the family business. Now you want to gun down a police captain. Why? Because he slapped you in the face a little? What do you think this like the Army where you can shoot 'em from a mile away? No you gotta get up like this and, badda-bing, you blow their brains all over your nice Ivy League suit. C'mere.
