Truth

I am not sure I have ever written a movie review blog. But here goes.

This past weekend, we saw “Truth”, the movie about what came to be known as Rathergate, the news story that took down Dan Rather. Regardless of whether you lean the same way as the movie, I recommend visiting a movie theatre soon to take this one in.

First, really excellent acting. As some point I literally forgot that Robert Redford was on the screen and not Dan Rather. Cate Blanchett played a realistic Mary Mapes, Rather’s producer who ran the infamous story.

Of course, it has been 11 years since this all actually transpired. Many of the critics of this film take issue with how the film portrays Rather and the contentious underpinnings of the story. That said, for those of us who remember these events as they transpired, this movie is worth seeing.

Interested in the story since it involves someone with great credibility well-earned through the time leading to the incident. I do not like to see good people take a fall and I find instructive learning what occurred, including what impacted his judgment and that of relevant staff in leading to the "fall."

Dan Rather took on the George W. Bush machine, and got brutally crushed. Something about an IBM Correcting Selectric typewriter and Microsoft Word and typefaces, if memory serves.

I had the good fortune to go to a screening where Dan Rather moderated a talkback with Robert Redford. Seems they've been friends for nearly 40 years. Very interesting how the real question was redirected into the question of a documents authenticity, and that it brought down so many talented people.
