Taking A Leap

When was the last time you completely stepped out of your comfort zone and did something crazy? That is not something I do very often. Generally, I am a cautious person and do not, comfortably step away from my comfort zone.

Most people who know me know I have a fear of flying. In order to fly, I generally take valium so I can sleep through the flight. That’s why it was surprising to me, when planning our shore excursions during our trip to Alaska last year, my husband suggested a helicopter ride to the top of a glacier. The thought of riding in a helicopter was terrifying to me, especially since the flight was too short for me to take any valium. But, persuaded by my husband’s reasoning of “When are we ever going to get the opportunity again to go to the top of a glacier again?” I reluctantly agreed.

My fifteen minute flight up to the glacier in the helicopter was shaky and, therefore, terrifying to me. But the reward at the end of the flight was worth it. There are no words to describe how it felt to be on top of that glacier, literally on top of the world. The flight down was much smoother and, therefore, more tolerable for me.

Would I take another helicopter ride? I don’t know. But I’m very glad I took that one. Have you ever stepped way out of your comfort zone?

Several years ago, Jerry and I went to Phoenix for a dance convention and took road trips to see some of the sights. While driving some where I saw biplane tours advertised on the side of the roads. Without saying anything, I'll pulled in and asked Jerry if he wanted to go. As a former pilot, he was all in; but was shocked I would agree to ride in a biplane. I was frightening; but also thrilling!

I took a helicopter ride over New York for a client who wanted that video footage. I felt safer than in a big jet.
