Bagel Stores

There are a few bagel stores in our neighborhood. Two within walking distance, although you'd pass one on the way to the second. Several others are a short drive.
I am not sure whether any of them are significantly “better” than any other; however the loyal fans of any one of them swear that others don't compare to theirs.
And there are different criteria: ambience, decor, the salads, the lox, the cream cheese and, finally, the bagels. Also consider the price. I am amazed at how different some of the prices are. But where does convenience fit in?
Oftentimes, I go out of my way for bagels, driving past one, two or three bagel stores on my way. Not the most convenient, but something makes it worthwhile to go the extra distance.

I wonder whether the bagel stores in my life are an allegory for other behavior. Sometimes, for whatever reason, we don't do what is most convenient.

There is something about Increasingly, I am asking myself why?

There are two bagel stores, one a short drive and has been on the same corner for many years. It used to be my favorite but about a year ago another aspect of the equation reared its ugly head. The staff. Instead of being helpful and courteous, the new staff is rude & sloppy and cost the shop my patronage. They did me a big favor! The shop where I can walk is family run, pleasant and efficient as can be. Plus their bagels and coffee are fabulous!

OMG - sitting and eating a whole wheat flagel with egg salad from FAMILY BAGELS as I read this post. This is the Konel favorite in Plainview! Maybe we should have a bagel taste-testing at the picnic in Plainview Saturday ;)

For many years (decades, really) the best bagels (in my book) were those made by H&H, right across 80th Street from Zabar's on Broadway. Several years ago, they had some sort of financial problem (some say there was all manner of chicanery) and closed abruptly.

Since then my wife discovered a little bagel shop on Garth Road in Eastchester (which for the uninitiated happens to be in southern Westchester County), and truth be told, the bagels are really quite good, and always warm out of the oven.

But I do agree with Fred-- that kind of carb-loading isn't good for the system, so I keep myself to once-a-month.

The best are Ess-A-Bagel in Manhattan. The water is what does it. Glad I can stay fit even with some bagels thrown in...
Always worth it to go the extra mile for quality.

Not every bagel is a bagel. And I require a good bagel shop to carry excellent bialys to pass muster. Certain items claimed as bagel are not bagels including by certain chains, and almost every bagel sold in food carts in Manhattan is not a babel but a roll with a hole.

We have our favorite, Tal Bagels, just a block away from our apartment. Everything is amazingly fresh...bagels, bialys, white fish, lox, etc. We don't go often; but when we do it's a treat!

We have so many bagel stores in Oceanside. But, the only one I go to is 24 hour bagel. Their bagels are the best and worth the drive.
