Father's Day

Categories
Holidays

Thank you "Hard Hitting" Don Bernstein for relinquishing your prime time Sunday spot, but the following just bubbled up and would not wiait until Friday.

I have heard that Mother's and Father's Days are "Hallmark Holidays", but in fact they were initiated at the start of the 20th Century for good non commercial reasons. Of course, Mother's Day came first and they felt sorry for us and soon gave us a special day too.

Having two married sons and two sets of grandchildren, Father's Day is a magnet to draw Family together and it is nice to be recognized and treated as special. However, the giving of presents aspect is really not necessary and at times disappointing (both for the giver and receiver).

For others the holiday is far far more complicated and discordant.  In the past weeks I have heard men complaining about having to show up 0n their designated day and endure Family.  It is so sad to hear their tales of divorce, disaffected children and more.

It makes me feel so fortunate and appreciative.

Happy Father's Day!

I miss my father everyday - and father's day is an especially sad day for me. However this year - I have invited two young families over for a party with their children. I bought a Fudgie the Whale cake from Carvel ( My father's day tradition) - and plan to Celebrate with them.

One of my favorite days of the year. Children, grandchildren, father in law, they will all be up here spending the day. What can be better than that (a little sun though would help).

Yes Father's Day is a complex
day filled with happiness
recollections, and perhaps
regrets. Fred touched on
the depth of the day that is
more than burgers for many.

How nice to be able to have this Father's Day gift from you today Fred ! I'm always looking to fulfill the quintessential this or the quintessential that...The quintessential Father's Day is beginning to shape as we speak. I have a 10 pound Brisket in the smoker. My own coffee based dry rub working it's magic. 18 hours should do. I put it in last night around midnight after a wild ass Harley ride through the mountains fueled by Cigars and Tequila. The kids and grandkids began to trickle in last night as I was finishing my Cigar at the original Alice's Restaurant. My daughter brought a plate of fresh Cannolis...The beer is on ice and Neil Young has already bought a side of beef at the country store. THAT barbecue will be about as interesting as mine I'm sure. I can hear the music across the ridge. " Long May You Run " brother....Of course the dogs and I have already hit the cardio so I'm gearing up for the 2 fingers of Bulleit rye and the Cubans to be shared with my boys around late PM when the sun gives off that special mountain flattering light. Mama is wearing some sexy blue tights and being nice to me as opposed to yesterday. No complaints. The music is streaming and the silenced video of yesterday's Yankee Old Timer's Day brings nostalgia. Living in the moment and living the dream . My son Luke is finishing up his last 2 weeks at Quantico as a Marine Corps Officer Candidate. We miss him and wonder what it is that he has sworn to defend. I tell him..."Fight for your Brothers son. For the Marines around you. I am so very PROUD OF YOU !" Being a father is a lifetime work of art. Forever young Brother...Forever.

It was a good father's day at our house. My wife drove into the City, met our son at Zabar's, and brought back all the delicacies that I so enjoy. Watched the Yankees lose to Detroit, which was not fun, and then my best friend came over and we all went swimming. Then, I barbecued hamburgers and sausages. Son went back to New York (he's got an apartment with a friend from both home and college in Greenwich Village) and today's a pretty mundane Monday.

Oh, and my wife gave me a wonderful present-- an enhanced version of a photograph in which I'm sitting with four of my closest friends from college, probably in our early 30s, in a beautiful wooden frame.
