I Would Recommend. . .

In a follow-up to Fred’s Friday blog about Facebook, I have to ask the following question, if you are on Facebook, do you use it to network professionally? This was the topic of discussion at our Long Island Women’s meeting last week and it made for an interesting dialogue.

I have recently noticed that people are turning to Facebook for professional recommendations. I have recently, in responses to requests on Facebook, given the names and phone numbers of my chiropractor (and husband), Gotham member Philip Gura, my ophthalmologist, Gotham member Todd Bragin, my dermatologist, my primary care physician, as well as criminal attorney and Gotham member Alan Schwartz.

Many at our meeting agreed that Facebook has become an important networking tool and have been using it to enhance their business presence on the internet. Others expressed their concern with networking on social media. They voiced their hesitation with networking on social media due, mostly, for the potential for unintended recipients of their message to distort its intended implication.

The conclusion at our meeting was that Facebook has recently become a valuable networking tool. Yet, one must use it with caution, mindful of the potential for abuse. What do you think? Do you network professionally on Facebook?

In my own way. I do not use it as a Promolist.

For the most part I do not - On Facebook it is too easy for someone to write a degrading comment about you or your business. If I become friendly with someone I will connect with them but primarily Facebook is for family/friends and LinkedIn is for business.

I like to think that FB allows people to know more about me and might just inspire them to want to know me even better. I'm with Fred in that it is not a Promolist but a way to add another dimension to what people know about us. Sharing more about our lives and our activities affords us new ways to help each other in business and otherwise. Like if I want to make pickles, I know who to call!

Just about every marketing "guru" speaks of LinkedIn, Twitter and FB as if they are one big essential place to network. I have my personal FB page and a professional one for the firm. I can't say that I have "gotten business" from it, but I am sure that increases my firm's visibility on the internet. At worst, its a free way to potentially drive traffic to your website.

Donna Levine wrote we spend a considerable amount of time getting people to our FB page I never really get a feel if its working or not but it clearly keeps our name in people's mind so that works towards our branding.

When I post to twitter it goes to my Facebook and then I may also post again to LinkedIn. I view Friends on Facebooks as a mix of friends, family, colleagues with whom I stay in touch. I do not know if it gains or loses me business but it shows the variety of people I mix with and my connections that enhance my ability to deliver for my clients.

I have a personal page and just launched a professional page, for those who want information about the real estate market.
