My Missing Software

Categories

I recently read an interesting article about facial recognition software. The article defined facial recognition software as “a computer application which automatically identifies or verifies a person’s identity.” When reading the article I realized that I, unlike many computers, have no internal facial recognition software. I can be introduced to someone, meet them again soon after in a different professional or social situation, and will not recognize them. I have often found myself uncomfortable when being warmly greeted by someone whom I do not recognize.

When this happens and I’m with my husband he gallantly saves me from embarrassment by offering his hand to the person and says, “I’m Philip and you are?” Without him, however, I’m left alone to explain to the individual that, unfortunately, I do not know who they are. While most people react graciously, I have had a few instances where people do not react kindly to my admission.

So, if we meet on the street and I do not know who you are, please do not be offended. I’m just missing some software.

I always say "I'm Fred Klein" when I encounter an unfamiliar person.

I guess that is why Fred keeps introducing himself to me.
But I am just like you. I can remember every fact in the world about a person, except their name. And it gets worse when I have to introduce them or meet them out of context.

I'm thinking of trying a software program called Brain HQ by a company called PositScience. A dear friend of mine who was starting to panic over her memory lapses used it for an hour a day for a few months, and she now has absolutely no sign of any cognitive problem at all. Very very cool. All I have to do is figure out where my time has gone, and I'll start soon.

When I joined the Mario Cuomo for Mayor Campaign out of Hofstra in 1977 there was this guy Steve Hoffman (who I lost touch with rather soon thereafter) with whom I worked with in the policy group (developing policy positions -- sound familiar?). He had a little spiral bad and he wrote the names of the people he met on the pad. It worked for him. These days it is much easier. The problem with networking is meeting so many people in one shot. I always worry I'll meet someone I am connected to on LinkedIn or is a Facebook Friend and I'll not recognize the person. My friend Arnie who did advance for many mayors going back to Lindsay, had a gift for recalling names; it was the job. Senator Schumer also excels in that way (you almost wonder is someone is whispering names to him..
