To wall mount or not to wall mount

We moved into a new house last weekend. We had to decide whether or not to mount our TVs on the wall. It I was not the most monumental decision. But neither is where to put the espresso spoons. The choice still has to be made. We ended up mounting the TVs in the living room and the bedroom, though I have to get used to it. It feels a little like I am in a hotel or hospital room. My father was actually an innovator when it came to mounting televisions. In the 1960s, I don't remember exactly when, we got our first color TV. He cut a rectangular hole in the wall in the den. Behind that wall was a closet. He mounted the TV on a shelf in the closet. From the den, the television set looked flush against the wall. The Bernsteins, ahead of its time.

I once sawed off edges of a TV console to fit it in a nook. Perfect fit!

As a good friend of mine always says this is a perfect example of a "First World Problem!"

In Manhattan, space is such a premium it's silly not to wall mount a flat screen.
Of course, we're still watching a big box TV that works fine so no wall mount yet.

We have a wall mount next to our sliding glass doors. On a sunny Saturday morning it makes it hard to see the tv.

A tV should be level with your head regardless of mounting. If you are sitting, that is generally two feet off the ground and it's why most stands are that height or so. Most people mount them much higher causing you to look up and eventually straining your neck. So it's is the height relative to your viewing position, that really matters most.

The configurations of both rooms involved do not support mounting. My answer remains simple. Do what makes sense.
