Cell Phones In School

New York City changed its rules yesterday. Cell phones are now allowed in schools. I say, it’s about time.

Just like anything else we teach our children, appropriate time and place for the use of their phones is right there on the list. [In my house, I have to admit I have less credibility than I would like on this subject but let’s ignore that for the moment.]

So, once kids know “time and place” for their phones, I like the fact that they are accessible during the school day. Of course, active cell phone use during class would not be appropriate but a quick text about after school plans or homework doesn’t hurt anyone.

What do you think about cell phones in school?

Between periods would be better if it could be policed

When we first gave our children their cell phones we told them that its primary purpose was so that we can get in touch with them. And, as many years later, we're still paying for their cell phones, the same holds true. :) My feeling on the school issue is that the same holds true. It should only be used as you suggested, to contact a parent as to after school plans etc. Never during class; between classes or during lunch only.

In our Schools in Lynbrook, they are not allowed in class but can be kept in lockers and used between class and lunch. In my opinion, phones don't belong in school. It is a distraction that causes much stress and, as it is for adults, it is addictive. Students will actually cut class to text one another which helps no one. My step-daughters grades went up from C's and B's to B's and A's during her senior year when we removed her phone (this after failing math in her Junior year). Harsh, but effective.

Forgive me, I feel like the only reprieve I have from my daughter is the time she is in school focusing on school work. Now she texts me during lunch to make after school plans or things that can wait....it's frustrating. I also punished her this weekend, took away her phone and ipad only to realize I had to give her back her phone because I am not the only one that has to communicate with her. Kept the ipad. Whooo hooo

I agree with Nancy. I've been communicating with my daughter via cell phone after school for years now (or occasionally during lunch or a bathroom break). The old cell phone policy was almost a joke. Of course, parents always have the option to take them away if need be.

When my son was in high school, we ignored Bloomberg's cell phone rule with gusto. So did most of his friends' parents. Should there have been another 9/11, we wanted instant communications.

I am all for communication with them. In today's busy and overbooked world, I love the connectivity. They need to develop the responsibility to know where and when. If it's policed, they won't learn this. I am a selfish "pro" - I want to be able to reach them. :)
